What I think about in wake of Quincy Jonesā€™ death is how big and audacious his life was. His grandfather was a slave. Itā€™s not like he descended from talented tenthers. His imagination, talent, charisma-and amazingly good fortune-took him places almost no black men had ever been The question that kept coming up for me over and over again while reading about Quincy Jonesā€™ life was this: How did he know he could do that?

lots of people want desantis to go away for obvious reasons but it's not gonna work because his supporters want blood & they don't care if the rollout was embarrassing. they'll love him even harder. looking a fool, lying outrageously, seeming cruel, none of that is fatal anymore desantis might indeed eventually flame out but the people on that side are playing a different game. nothing is embarrassing to them anymore. nothing is too outrageous. you just have to beat them because they're not going to beat themselves or bow out semi-gracefully anymore.

With understanding that this is easier said than done: I'm still looking for/hoping for prominent black Floridians, esp. those who are top college football recruits/transfers, to use this as a pretext to boycott all schools affected by this bill. If they don't want us, don't go. ICYMI

My friends at BuzzFeed News have deserved better for a long time. This is pathetic. With no disrespect to any other place Iā€™ve worked the past 20 years, nothing was as fun or exhilarating as being part of BuzzFeed News in its infancy. There was so much talent and energy and a real sense of mission. That it was all ruined within a decade is really depressing

if anything, i'm haunted by the idea that there's parts of my parents' lives that i don't know anything about and i'm trying desperately to get up to speed while I'm here with them. i'm just ... interested in them. so some of that is us just meeting each other where we are. That ain't a good answer. But beyond the obvious things, my mother and i laugh at the same things and like getting in a car and going anywhere. my pops and i are getting better as we get older, and there's not a person in this world i want to watch football with more than him.

Think about how many times her partner has narrowly averted getting beat up over her bullshit smh. Weā€™d either have to break up or sheā€™d have to go to games without me. To get me to watch a game from the stands, it needs to be on level of: CFP semifinal and/or all my best friends gonna be there so we can fight our way out of need be. I feel sorry for that brother but the last few years have seemingly turned the fan experience into MAGA rallies

The only child shit is actually pretty gravy when you're young. When you get older? Man, it'd be nice to have some help. Heh. It's funny (not *actually* funny) that you say that but yeah. That's where my revelation about this started.

I was thinking this too - been thinking it since last year, even - but more along the lines of: If America was the country it purports itself to be (warm, devout, compassionate, smart, a man who climbed out of poverty) he would be a clear contender even if he didnā€™t want to be. Itā€™s really wild that the Atlanta Dream got us here.

He can take his son, last yearā€™s No. 1 overall recruit and all of the Barstool money and following to Boulder but ā€¦ not this. I also had forgotten Deion had to scramble to get that degree that allowed him to become a college coach, because his academic record prior to that was notable only in that it led to a change in Florida state law lol latimes.com/archives/la-xpā€¦

lol there's absolutely nothing about this particular set of political beliefs that would stump any black person who knows better. please, try to meet even one of us. So you're telling me there's a subset of white people who don't think black people should have equal rights but are for spending money on massive public programs that disproportionately exclude black people??? Wow. Fascinating!

Literally took less than half of one (1) football season to see how cool and fun USC could be again. There's just not another program like this, man. In 2007, I interviewed John David Booty about the perks of playing at USC and he told me that ā€” for some reason ā€” Ashton Kutcher invited him to play catch over at Jon Voight's house. You just can't do that in, like, Columbia.

I assume this isnā€™t about those hundreds of thousands of children who were orphaned - to say nothing of the thousands who died themselves - but if youā€™re really just excited for Republicans to steamroll all precautions, please just say it with your chest. scientificamerican.com/article/the-nuā€¦ Motherfuckers are so beholden to ā€œtest scoresā€ at the expense of keeping people safe. Like, why we should care about test scores? People have their whole lives to learn, and not just to enter some already nonsense race to college thatā€™s already weighted toward the privileged.

oh dear, i forgot that people could hear that lol if you've used a wire reference with me anytime in the last 20 years, i've likely just nodded and said, "oh yeah that's what's up." if you didn't ask any follow-ups, that's on you.

Not really saying anything novel here but itā€™s almost inconceivable how the best shooter in league history is also one of its best off the dribble and an All-Star-level distributor. He really is perimeter Shaq, but if Shaq couldā€™ve hit free throws at the league average. I can say things like that now because Iā€™m no longer bitter about the 2018 WCF and Bron doesnā€™t have anything left to prove. Itā€™s not growth, itā€™s just clarity.

My pops was like, ā€œYou're definitely going to send Desmond to private school now, right? What with all these school shootings.ā€ And I was, like, ā€œactually seems like a safer course of action would be to send him to a large urban high school abandoned by white families tbh." His grandparents, who have now lived in Texas for more than 50 years, seem very disturbed that I take a much more dim view of private and suburban white-flight schools than they ever did.

After a 7-week absence i finally returned to Hang Up and Listen to spend 2/3s of my time talking about racism and slapping people over money w/my good friends @josh_levin & @BWDBWDBWD. The dude @jack_hamilton also swung by to talk NBA Finals. Good times. slate.com/podcasts/hang-ā€¦ @josh_levin @BWDBWDBWD @jack_hamilton And while mulling over the Anderson v Donaldson dustup, I realized I wanted to say baseballā€™s ā€œcultureā€ā€”incl a crowd booing 1 of the gameā€™s few black American stars over his objection to a slick Jackie Robinson comparisonā€”is likely 1 of the things that cost the game Kyler Murray

Neither in college nor in my 1st years as a journalist did anyone talk about applying skepticism to police statements. Itā€™s something you come to learn by trial and error, *or* you tacitly believe the police are mostly good and infallibleā€”which isnā€™t exactly unbiased reporting. The burden of proving or disproving bias in reporters never seems to go the other way on this one: placing your trust in ā€œauthoritiesā€ is as much an editorial choice as believing theyā€™re fundamentally liars.
