Designers, don't settle for constantly designing in between meetings and endless Slack bombardment. You deserve better than this. Close Slack for a few hours and ask teammates to text you if urgent.

Set recurring blocks of 3-4 hours in your cal for focus time. This week and next are probably slammed for you. Look 2+ weeks out and you'll find openings.

Salad: I’m totally freaking out right now.
Chef: Please romaine calm.

Can't let today escape without a dad joke thread. 🥁 Got fired from my bank job. A lady asked me to check her balance and I pushed her over.

What did Yoda say when he saw himself in high resolution? "HDMI."

Toughest part of being vegan? Keeping it to yourself.

One of Design’s greatest superpowers is to ask “what if” and produce concepts that visualize this quandary.

🧵 When we require Design to justify its work with the Big 3 — business priorities, roadmap scope, and data — we marginalize this superpower and relegate Design to a reactive role.

10 things I wish every design student knew:

🧵 1. Sometimes the straightest course to a successful career is the one with the most twists and turns. Embrace the pivots your learning journey will put in front of you.

Two years ago my doctor said I was going deaf. Haven’t heard from him since. 🥁

A dad joke thread... Bought a $1 wig today. It was a small price toupée. 🥁

I have 5 sons (3 college age!) and only 1 who really shows any interest in our field. 100% OK with this. But in thinking about why we're not seeing more youth enter our field, a thread. We haven’t figured out how to tell our story succinctly such as "I make it easier to use the interfaces you encounter every day." Even that's a stretch.

A reminder that the best time for a dad joke is to wait until it’s full groan. The other my dad was fired from his teller job. A lady asked to check her balance and he pushed her over.

Response to a friend who asked for a resume/CV review: "I’m surprised at how quickly I need to scan resumes these days. Whatever you can do to catch my eye with the most relevant information, the better."

What this translates to: 1. I'm scanning for both alignment and "dissonance". What relevant work/education/life experience do you have that aligns with the needs of this role? Looking across the *complete* spectrum of diversity what can you offer to shake up and strengthen the chemistry of our team?

We could all use a few more dad jokes right now. Here are some of my faves. (thread) How do you find Will Smith in the snow? Look for the fresh prints.

Of all the things I care about most when leading teams, this is near the very top:

Does each team member genuinely feel valued?

(thread) Strong leaders take time to understand, assess, goal against, and improve self-worth for each team member.

Daily screen time averages last week for some of the phones in our home (approx.):

7 hrs 50 min
6 hrs 15 min
5 hrs 45 min
5 hrs 20 min

(thread) Without the context of how time was spent, these averages—like other statistical averages—tell an incomplete story. But it’s fair to say for us these are higher than we're comfortable with as a family as we’ve reviewed our usage.

Here are some key traits that separate great designers from good designers:

(thread) Great relationships: Great design can’t ship without great relationships. Be pleasant to work with! Design is the minimum bar, relationships are the highest bar. Work that ships without relationships is often referred to as 'art'.

20 years building for the web as of this year! 🎉

Here are some of my top takeaways over two decades: Your brilliant idea will probably take two years to gain sustainable traction. Stick with it. Consistency often trumps creativity.
