[Tyagaraja & Rama - A thread] Tyagaraja considered himself as much a rama bhakta as a composer. Rama was his ista dhaivam, his muse. He worshipped the idol of Rama daily and was distraught when he lost the idol. His krithis are mostly his conversations with Rama. Tyagaraja has two groups of krithis: the Utsava Sampradaya krithis and Divya Nama Sankeetams that are dedicated to Rama. The first set is about Tygaraja doing pooja to the idol in his house. These krithis start from Melukolupu (waking him up) and end in Lalli.

[Music Thread] The great mridagam vidwan, Karaikudi Mani, passed away two days back. He was one of those vidwans who was technically superb and could also attract the audience with his playing style. He not only please those who understood laya well but also those who didn't. His playing was energetic and that energy is what drew a lot of people towards his playing. He could lift up the song with his amazing patterns. It was always a pleasure to listen to him.

[Raga Thread - Post Trinity ragas] Today, we will look at some ragas that have become famous after the period of the Trinity. Some of you may be surprised that these ragas were not known to the Trinity. Some of the popular ragas today have become popular in post Trinity period. Musicians and singers do love to create or assimilate new ragas to give color to their compositions or performance respectively. Hence there is a constant search for new ragas.

[Raga thread] Today we will take up the raga Vasantha and Lalitha for this thread. Vasantha is the more popular of these two ragas. For the uninitiated, Lalitha will sound close to Vasantha but once you keep hearing them, you will see that Lalitha has a personality of its own. There are limited number of krithis in both these ragas. Let us have look at them.

[Thread on Nadaswaram Artists] Nadaswaram is an instrument that has inspired a lot of vocal artists. The all time greats like Semmangudi and GNB are known to have been inspired by nadaswaram. Many of the artists of the earlier era had grown up in small towns / villages. In those places, nadaswaram was constantly played during temple festivals. Great artists played nadaswaram throughout the night.

YadhukulaKhambhoji is a quintessential Carnatic raga in the sense that you will not find it in other systems of music. It has a strong carnatic flavor.

[Thread Dedicated to Bharath Ratna Lata Mangeshkar] Today we heard the sad news that Lataji had expired. She was 92 years old. Lataji was one of the greatest singers of India. We will pay our humble tribute to her by playing her songs based on Hindustani ragas. 1/n Lataji had the knack of getting to the soul of any raga. Her pitch perfect, honey dripping voice, helped her convey the beauty of a raga to our ears. Not only did she hit the notes perfectly, the gamakas and the jarus were perfectly in place. 2/n

[Raga Thread: Begada] It has been a while since we did the raga thread. Let us do it today. The raga for today will be Begada. Begada is a quintessential Carnatic raga. It is not seen any other system of music. Begada is a raga in which the Trinity of Carnatic music have composed pieces. It is fairly old raga.

As we celebrate Deepavali here is a small thread on krithis dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi We perform Lakshmi pooja during Deepavali. So we will play a few krithis on Goddess Lakshmi in this thread. Though all of us want Goddess Lakshmi to reside in our house, the number of krithis on Goddess Lakshmi is not high.

[Raga Thread - Mayamalavagowla] Due to various reasons we have been unable to start Season 3 of our youtube series. In the meanwhile we thought we will put up a raga thread once in a while. Today we will focus on the raga Mayamalavagowla Those who have learnt even a bit of Carnatic music formally will know this raga. This is the raga in which the 'saralivarisai' is taught.
