In Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli, a conflict over forests, mining and community rights is escalating. Tribal residents allege detentions and blockades by the police as large-scale deforestation begins for the Adani Group’s Dhirauli coal mine. 1/7 Image Records show 1,397.54 hectares of forest land in Amari & Basi has been allotted for mining. Singrauli—already among India’s most polluted regions—now faces the prospect of losing 3.2 lakh trees. Locals claim nearly 10,000 trees have already been felled, triggering what they describe as a “water–forest–land crisis.” Eight villages, largely dependent on forests, fear severe livelihood losses. 2/n
