This is making the rounds again: asserting that it is easier to start a hard company than an easy one. I can see why it has gone viral: it's counter-intuitive and extremely meme-able. It has a high-level core narrative that makes sense: smart folks are attracted to hard problems. But is it really true? I argue not.

What is the difference between Chaos and Change?

A more conservative friend shared this tweet and started me on this 🧵: My first reaction was to reply: "I think conservatives are those rearranging deck chairs on the titanic... most won't even take a shot with the vax... uh I mean lifeboat"

Dear @levelsio and @dannypostmaa,

You may have lost the first skirmish but it's literally been <2 months since you launched! This is just the beginning. So many ways you can come back on top! Go with $0 marginal cost, viral loops and the best Ux! 1/n
They may have a cost advantage now, but Apple just released optimizations for Stable Diffusion on iOS 16.2. This drives your marginal costs to $0: game changer!

Dear @levelsio

I am a student at Write of Passage, and our final assignment is to “cold call” someone I admire. You immediately came to mind as I see you as a kindred spirit (but one far more successful and prolific) Part of the assignment was to research and write about you as a time traveler

2014/15 was a pivotal time for @levelsio. He suffered a panic attack after graduation when he was forced to choose:

the safe choice to be a soul-sucking investment banker

or

lean into the serendipity that his early YouTube success had shown
levels.io/tobias-van-sch… The panic attack made him double down on the latter. He travelled to 12 different places in 12 months and launch 12 startups. A start up a month!

I'm still in the fun, divergence (i.e. procrastinating) phase of my Write of Passage essay on @levelsio and I came across this wonderful article on how he researches new ideas: levels.io/startup-retrea… In this 2015 article, he researches 6 remote work retreat places/services. I thought it'd be interesting to revisit each of them and see how they are doing in 2022. Here's what I found bit.ly/3haA0TR

I started 2 venture backed startups back in the dotcom days. One was sold for $193 million, another raised tens of millions.

Both were wiped out after the dotcom bust.

A thread on what I learned the hard way: We weren't agile enough. We used tactics that were inappropriate for us. We had to take advantage of our size and ability to innovate

So, what did I learn? Yes, do build a better mousetrap — just don’t expect the world to beat a path to your door!

Listening to @benthompson and @andrewsharp's excellent @stratechery podcast, my hot take:
Biden's new China Chip policy is to Apple's Appstore policies!
Apple has had to finely balance allowing developers to keep creating the most innovative and useful apps on the iOS platform while retaining "full control" in the name of security but also business monopoly and vertical integration

Many parents lament: "my kid just wants to play video games", "they don't even want to create or make anything online" - "they just want to play" But what if this is a false dichotomy - or at least will be one in a few years?

Very much enjoying @devonzuegel's latest installment of Order By Design devonzuegel.com/post/owd-4-sup… One thing that struck me, tho', was the not quite satisfactory answer to the central question that Devon posed in the episode: How do you cause a cultural change (in the norms of a city)?

Wow, *free* covid testing from Stanford. Answer a bunch of questions and got a home test kit within 3 hours! catchstudy.stanford.edu I had to answer around 20 personal health related questions but no identifying info besides email and phone #. Almost immediately, I got a text that the kit would be delivered in 3 hours, with nice real-time package tracking!

@BenedictEvans @capesean @Apple 1/ If the supercharger network were merely a power cable, why is there no other charging network close to what Tesla's network in terms of reach and charging speed? A Model 3 charges up to 125 miles in 15 mins, other networks are > 5x slower? s.url.com/BkgvIAFSEm @BenedictEvans @capesean @Apple 2/ In fact, the closest we have are plans for such networks in 2020 (or beyond). Minimally, it takes time and learning to build out a charging network s.url.com/rJepQCKSVX
