I'm starting a new thread about this because the other thread was getting long. Yes, it's about race and comics. But I want to talk specifically about coloring comics and how it leads to endless casting arguments. (Colorists--the comic kind, not the color struck kind-- jump in!)
Back in the dark ages before the wonders of Adobe, comic books depicted race in the most simplistic (and offensive) way possible. If you were Arab? Your skin was GRAY. (I kid you not.) Asian? Yellow. Latin or Black? Brown.

Well, it's been spoiled, so I'm gonna talk about it. It's comics. It's soap! Characters die and come back. But there's a diversity "rule" that's been broken. When you only have one, you treat that one with care. Because that one unfortunately represents all.
Honestly, there shouldn't be just one. It's ridiculous when there is just one. Or even two! It reinforces the notion of the monolith. But even with just two, you give creators space to breathe.

I'm going to be honest. I'm a little wary about the lack of a Black matchmaker. But they have a Latino and an Arab matchmaker which is nice. And the show just started, so maybe they'll have additions in the second season.
