tomorrow: @DeanPreston’s hearing on bus stop accessibility!

Dean’s resolution urging SFMTA to remove parking in front of bus stops passed 12-0. SFMTA has authority to remove 20ft of parking at stops, but their plan is to review each stop in person—they say this will take 7 years land use and transportation committee meeting starts at 1:30pm, this is item 9 sfbos.org/sites/default/…

holy shit. Dan White was a homophobe & SFPD cop who later became supervisor on a platform citing an "exodus from San Francisco" due to a "deteriorating social structure." After resigning he broke into City Hall & murdered the first gay supervisor and the mayor. He served 5 years in prison.

I just heard a commenter in *support* of Mandelman's legislation say "let's get rid of the mentality that they all need to stay in the city" and "this city is not for everyone." Some are calling in support from groups with names like "RescueSF"

It's clear what this is about. Someone now, in support of this legislation, saying it is like how Tesla makes quick software and hardware updates to solve product problems.

interesting stuff at the SFMTA board today. Director Tumlin says both the current configurations and previous configurations of JFK Drive, Great Highway are "unacceptable." Tumlin also says consultants are being brought on to analyze which bus lines should be brought back. Tumlin also mentions a pilot plan in which JFK Drive will be kept closed to cars, even if the COVID emergency ends, while outreach and planning continues.

happening now: a panel on transit recovery with reporter @carlykgraf, Transit Workers 250A union president Roger Marenco and @SFTRU director Mark Cordes – eventbrite.com/x/route-to-rec… well that was...interesting. someone joined the Zoom event using *my name* and saying homophobic and racist stuff, and the hosts of the meeting have appeared to kick...me out. not sure about the impostor

guess i'll watch the recording

poverty tows: types of tows that have disproportionate impacts on people w/ low incomes or who live in their vehicle. folks at Coalition on Homelessness, GLIDE, and more are advocating to end them

made a map showing how they are concentrated in low-income and Black & Brown areas Map: Where "poverty tows" happen in San Francisco people have their vehicles towed because they can't pay their tickets or registration, then lose their vehicle when they can't pay the tow fee. heard a story of a mother who ended up sleeping on BART because of this

meanwhile, SFMTA loses millions yearly on this–towing is costly

went into the facebook group set up by some neighborhood NIMBYs about the new safe tent site for unhoused people.

it really makes it clear that the narrative they're trying to paint – that they aren't opposed to the idea but simply think the location is wrong – is false. when the chronicle wrote about how sf had identified 42 potential other locations for the safe tent sites, neighbors said:
"Bad news...I see that one is right near where I go to work..."
"What can we do to stop this?"
"...fight club staging areas and covid-19 breeding grounds"

thread: 110 years ago today, something very good happened: san francisco voters passed ballot props to make sf the first city in the country to have a publicly-operated transit system, breaking the monopoly of our privately run transit company. here’s the story of how we got muni it’s 1909 and ~all transit in sf is run by united railroads (left). people hate this company. service is awful, equipment obsolete. their labor relations are bad, leading to employee strikes.

it was so bad, sf workers once threatened to destroy a streetcar. (right)

thread: a month ago, i made a public records request to BART for data on fare evasion citations, including race, age, gender and station. today i got back one year's worth of data, ~12,000 citations from july '18 to '19.

1st, let's take a look at how citations break down by race this confirms the unjust distribution of fare evasion citations to black riders of bart. this trend, which was originally reported to the BART board last year, has continued. when you look at BART's rider demographics from around the same time, you can see it clearly.
