I look forward to the @ICOnews explaining how "Generalised location data trend analysis is helping to tackle the coronavirus crisis." ico.org.uk/about-the-ico/… what is the claimed utility of such data? It can't show spread of infection as that would require identifiable data. It won't be able to determine compliance with social distancing because the accuracy of the data is not sufficient. It won't be able to distinguish between those out for their daily exercise, essential shop, essential work, and those flouting the rules.

Reading the Govt response (dataavailability.pmc.gov.au) to the Productivity Commission's report on Data Availability and Use is fairly depressing, if you still care about privacy that is. There's a hint as to where the response is heading on page 2, which contains just 2 quotes, one of which is "Some 91 per cent of Australians would be willing to share their de-identified medical data if it went towards research purposes." (Research Australia 2016) a bold claim...
