Another corruption bombshell at Austin Police.

APD leaders:

1-Knew BEFORE 2020 their "less lethal" shotguns caused extra harm but still armed cops at protests w/ them

2-Timed "investigating" this to dodge accountability for themselves & cops that recklessly fired at protesters All those people constantly espousing that we need to uncritically "support" this institution - including TODAY at City Hall as #ATXCouncil approved a straight bribe to Austin Police - keep getting clowned.

And they wonder why folks don't trust police?

Austin City Council was clear last September they wanted to hear from voters on @EquityActionATX's police oversight ballot measure in May.

While some surely hoped that the ballot measure would give the City more leverage to achieve stronger negotiated oversight...🧵 A rogue, now-fired City Manager pressed forward w/ 4-year contract negotiations that abandoned stronger oversight long ago.

Council should've provided public direction to pivot to a 1-year contract sooner, but a majority favored this & the City Manager & staff had to have known.

This chart from @AKMcGlinchy reveals many of the lies about police staffing & funding being used to push Prop A in Austin.

1. The city council has long OVER-funded APD staffing w/ more budgeted positions than APD could fill. 🧵 2. The decline in officers started BEFORE Council delayed cadet classes to overhaul the training academy or reduced the APD budget by cutting unfilled positions. Cutting these unfilled positions didn't impact staffing.

1/ Homelessness is decriminalized as of today in #ATX!

We're gonna be sharing back w/ directly impacted folks in the coming weeks but given that the new rules go into effect today & the persistent misinformation being spread, thought I'd share my interpretation of it all. 2/ Speaking of misinformation, this @statesman headline today feeds into the biggest lie being told about the new rules.

In fact, people won't be allowed to tent camp on sidewalks if it blocks passage or makes use of it unreasonably inconvenient.
