As ‘unabated’ is in the spotlight at COP28, a little bit of history:

In April 2009, the UK gov announced that it would not allow multiple new coal power plants to be built.

This followed an extensive NGO campaign + advice from the new Committee on Climate Change.

1/ Screenshot of Guardian newspaper headline ‘No new coal without carbon capture, UK government rules’, from April 2009. The proposed new coal power plants were already moving forward, and some had completed permitting.

It couldn’t tear up the legal process, so the UK gov used planning rules to require that any new coal plant would have to fit CCS.

📢*Important Footnote Klaxon*📢

The @IPCC_CH Synthesis Report Summary for Policy Makers includes a powerful paragraph in small letters on p30.

It pours cold water all over Japan's promotion of co-firing ammonia in coal power plants (+ other pro-fossil arguments).

Over recent years, there has been a lack of clarity as to what is meant by the term 'unabated'.

In 2021, we published an @e3g explainer to demystify its legitimate use by regulators vs its abuse by fossil fuel interests.

The G7 climate and environment ministers have negotiated hard this week and the communique is out.

Here is what it means for coal:

For the first time ever the G7 has noted explicitly that coal is a problem that needs to be solved, urgently.

1/n
G7 ministers have recognised that the phase out of unabated coal power generation is already underway but must be accelerated, so that power systems can be ‘overwhelmingly decarbonised’ during the 2030s.

Prime Minister @ImranKhanPTI has just announced a decision that Pakistan will have no more power generation based on coal.

This is a substantial new commitment made to #ClimateAmbitionSummit and should be warmly applauded.

1/n PM Khan stated: "At the same time we have decided we will not have any more power based on coal. We have already scrapped 2 coal power projects, which were supposed to produce 2600MW of energy, and replaced it by hydroelectricity."

This is a big deal!
