#leafsforever #timetohunt #NHLPlayoffs Stolarz-Bennett 🧵
I can't help but think that had the referees called a penalty on this Bennett incident with Stolarz, there would not be as much outcry as there is for supplementary discipline. Seeing Stolarz forced to leave the game in the manner that he did is tough to watch. These players all compete hard and willingly sacrifice their bodies for the benefit of the team. This an unfortunate injury that nobody wants to see happen.

I played 18 years in the NHL.
I won an MVP, Stanley Cup and two Olympic Gold medals.
But in 1998, I almost died on the ice.

Here's the first-hand story of what happened on May 10, 1998. Second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs vs. Detroit Red Wings I blocked an oncoming slap shot, that hit me directly on the heart. I quickly covered it to get a whistle. It stung and I had a little trouble catching my breathe.

The Playoff Grind is Real 🧵

The wear and tear in professional sports is real. Especially in the NHL. The regular season is long and a grind but the thrill of playing for the Stanley Cup is worth it! The playoffs is another animal all together. From the bumps and bruises to the major injuries that players deal with, the adrenaline can mask a lot of this. So can other things …

Yes! Players take a myriad of things to play in games. Price of greatness

Something most people have no idea about that is a huge part of being a professional athlete: TRAVEL!

It can be a lot of fun but really tough on the body!

Here’s what traveling was like over the course of my 20 years in the NHL My rookie season in 1993 we flew commercial and of course, being a rookie, I was tasked with getting a middle seat most of the time.

We typically only flew on private charters for back to back game nights.

Otherwise I was sandwiched in the middle seat! LOL

When you hear about X player making $30M over 5 years ($6M/yr) you think wow he made it. However that is not always the reality, in this thread I am going to break down how much they take home and where the rest of it goes. For this thread here is the example:

X player gets $30M paid over 5 years and earn on paper $6M a year. Here is who they pay:

Right off the bat escrow gets taken out of every check. On average about 10%. Most people have no idea about escrow.

I played 20 years in the NHL.

I was one of the highest earning NHL players of all time. And friends with many other pro athletes.

My guess is more than 50% of pro athletes have financial issues in retirement. Here are 3 problems I’ve seen (and some stories).

Point #1: Athletes tend to be wasteful early in their careers and think the money train will last forever. (Been there done that)

It doesn’t. We are only one injury away from retirement. Always!
