The thing is that science fiction has primed us to frame AI as a specific type of human rights issue, because AI is great as a METAPHOR in science fiction for various types of dehumanization—labour alienation, neurodivergence, race, gender, to name a few examples.
It’s an easy fallback for “person whose humanity is considered conditional” with a fantastic underpinning to it, to talk about how real people often have their humanity denied, or are otherwise alienated from it, and how we move the goal posts of what it means to be human.
