Good morning. What better way to spend a bank holiday weekend than trying for the first time sailrail to get to the sbsta meeting in Bonn to help present the @IPCC_CH Syr findings Monday pm? I’ll use thread to:
1. Try to work out if any saved emissions
2. Report progress
1/n I booked the travel before the latest round of uk rail strikes was announced so that adds an extra level of jeopardy. Fortunately I split the journey ‘in London’ (not entirely sure I won’t be stuck in Birmingham or Crewe or even Holyhead) so have some leeway 2/n

This is a pretty atrocious selective view of what the IPCC AR6 has to say on methane and doesn't help the Irish agricultural community one iota. The IPCC report states that strong, rapid and sustained methane reductions are required. (1/n) Here is the relevant headline statement in the SPM. Note the use of the term Strong, rapid and sustained vis-a-vis methane (CH4) emissions reductions (2/n)

My colleague from INRIM - the Italian National Metrology (not a typo before you ask) institute @AndreaMerlone has sent on some interesting titbits about the 48.8C possible new national and regional (European) heat record yesterday. Image @AndreaMerlone The station looks close to the coast but apparently is in a valley physically separated from the coast. Apparently a Fohn wind developed - you can see that in this plot - the wind shifts 180 degrees, humidity drops and the temperature elevates. Then it collapses suddenly. Image

Having been asked by national media what matters to Ireland in the recent @IPCC_CH report one of the things I have mentioned is committed sea level rise. Apparently some choose not to believe what is said so lets unpack this further. First the SPM says the following ... (1/n) @IPCC_CH So, we are committed to long term changes and those changes take time because the oceans and particularly the ice sheets (as a whole) take a long time to respond. We are bequeathing a problem to many generations hence (2/n)

The new @IPCC_CH #SRCCL report is available at ipcc.ch/srccl-report-d… . The SPM is a very interesting read and has several interesting points that jump out at me both generally and from an Ireland perspective. (1/n) Firstly climate and land degradation are entwined risks. If we want to reduce risk to land we need to get serious about addressing climate change. But also, agriculture globally is c.25% contributor (nationally its higher). Proverbially making a rod for our own backs (2/n)
