The UK needs to be delivering a rapid, radical programme to achieve net zero emissions within a decade.
Neither the Tories or Labour are even talking in these terms, so it is no surprise that there is little general understanding of the scale of this challenge.
The nation discussion is predicated on the assumptions that
- squeaking in by 2050 is ok (i.e. we don’t need to change much now)
- 2050 is an ok target (when in fact that is only for a 50% chance of keeping to 1.5 degrees).
The Greens rightly reject these as insufficient.
