The 20th Century hill figure paintings of Maurice Askew are some of my favourite things in the whole world right now.

I have just given Jim his current favourite ball of yarn and photographed him in the hope it might persuade a few more people to sign up for my newsletter and podcast: tomcox.substack.com. If you’d rather not, that’s fine. I’ll just tell him it’s because he’s not cute enough. Image To be fair, he does feature in the latest one.

I loved nothing in the world more than The Beano when I was eight and was a paid up double member of the Dennis The Menace Fanclub but there were some things I just didn't see eye to eye with him on, especially the whole "baths and school are bad" thing. I loved baths and school. I say "double member" because I also got my nan to join the Dennis Fanclub on my behalf, mainly so I could get a second gooogly eyes Gnasher badge, just in case I ever lost mine.

A detailed report on an encounter I had a few years ago with some cows in a field. I wrote this about ten years ago. I chopped it out of three books before it finally went in this one: blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/produ…. My dad Mick did a nice sketch of all the cows, including Geoff.

Something quite unexpected and fantastic happens when you scroll through the photos of this listing for two derelict cottages in Cornwall: rightmove.co.uk/properties/123… I am DESPERATE to know the story behind this. Not looking for a house and certainly couldn't afford to buy and restore this one if I was but tempted to book a viewing just to find out.

No animal running at high speed looks more like it's saying "shit shit shit shit shit shit shit" than a pheasant. My best pheasant photo.

I can always tell when my cat has been up to no good because she tries a bit too hard to look casual. Don’t go imagining that being this attractive comes easy. It’s a full time job which leaves very little room for anything else.

Always with the "Are you a cat person or a dog person?" Why can't you be both? Why can't I like brooding introspective singer-songwriters AND hi-energy disco? “Are you an octopus person or a flying ant person? You can’t be both at the same time.”

That fantastic moment when you play an LP you’ve heard hundreds, maybe thousands, of times, and hear new stuff in it. When it hits you just what it really is, how far it went, even though the people who’d made it had already done so much. What a mindblowing work of art this is. Image Still skipped ‘Yellow Submarine’, though, and still prefer the Stones.
