I'm reposting this thread because it's gotten terrific comments, but limited circulation since I've been shadow banned. (Reposts are greatly appreciated.)

(Reposts are greatly appreciated.)harpercollins.com/products/den-o… 2/It started w/ Nixon’s election in 1968. Back then, Nixon “secretly deputized GOP operative Anna Chennault to intervene on his behalf and talk directly to the powers that be in South Vietnam” to make sure they would NOT participate in the Paris Peace Talks.
Sure enough, South Vietnam withdrew from the peace talks, Nixon won, and the war continued for six more years, resulting in another twenty thousand unnecessary American deaths, not to mention millions of Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese casualties. But it remained a secret until too late. The Dems didn’t fight back.

When I started out in journalism what excited me most was that blockbuster stories like the My Lai Massacre, the Pentagon Papers, and Watergate could takeover the national conversation and change the course of history. 2/ But those days are gone and the WaPo-LATimes capitulation to Trump seems like the final nail. Even though he has more than $200 billion, Bezos feels so scared of Trump that he capitulates before Election Day.

Thanks, @KCBoyd3. In House of Trump, House of Putin, I wrote about Trump laundering $$ for Russian Mafia--now surfacing in lawsuits in Kazakhstan regarding the Trump SoHo which was developed by Felix Sater's Bayrock Group. 2/ I wrote, "Khrapunov and Muktar Ablyazov, another Kazakh oligarch, have been accused of embezzling about $10 billion from a Kazakh bank and laundering it through shell companies, which purchased real estate all over the world.

The Specter of 2016, excellent piece by @TimothyDSnyder. The FBI turned a blind eye to Trump's ties to Russia long before McGonigal. As I wrote in House of Trump, House of Putin, relying in part on FBI files...1/ open.substack.com/pub/snyder/p/t… in 1984 Russian mobster David Bogatin laundered $6 million thru Trump real estate when he bought 5 Trump Tower condos in a building that became a home for Russian Mafioso like Vyaschelav Ivankov, various oligarchs, and a paradigm for $$ laundering on a massive scale..2/

1/ But there was a dark side to 9/11 domestically that people forget. I wrote about it in House of Bush, House of Saud in 2004.@DashDobrofsky @gregolear 2/Let’s not forget, that even tho 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi, & Osama bin Laden masterminded the attacks, Saudi complicity was almost completely dismissed by Bush administration.

1/Speaking of which, now that we know Trump stole classified materials, it makes sense to review exactly how he's been compromised by Russia. @gtconway3d , @DashDobrofsky @KCBoyd3 @kelly2277 @TheRickWilson @anders_aslund @robreiner @natsechobbyist @djrothkopf RTs appreciated. 2/In 1980, as I wrote in American Kompromat, Trump bought 100s of TVs for the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Yuri Shvets, a fmr major in the KGB, told me that the man who sold the TVs, Semion Kislin, was a “spotter agent” for the KGB—i.e. someone seeking new assets and agents to cultivate.

Okay. In the 90s I was editor of Boston Magazine and we ran a guide to Martha’s Vineyard including nude beaches favored by local celebs such as one @AlanDersh 1/ As soon as it appeared, I got an angry call from Dershowitz shouting at me that we have to retract it because he’s never been to a nude beach in his life. 2/

1/In contrast to the way Biden is bringing NATO back together, let's look at the way his predecessor dealt with NATO over the last 35 years 2/In 1987, according to fmr KGB Major Yuri Shvets, having been cultivated by the KGB, Trump went to Moscow where he was force fed various foreign policy sound bites, returned to US and took out full page ads assailing NATO.

Excellent question, which I try to address in American Kompromat, but I will try to simplify. Trump made a practice of cultivating friends in the FBI as early as the 1970s by befriending powerful figures in Bureau such as James Kallstrom. 1/ who says they had weekly phone conversations for decades. Plus, Trump(famously stingy) gave $1.3 M to Kallstrom's favorite charity, and 2/

1/ Those interested in the back story re Rojansky and his rejection might look at both the Ukrainian press and my book, American Kompromat.@Billbrowder and @NatashaBertrand 2/ In 2018, in a Kiev paper, day.kyiv.ua/ru/article/eko…, Ekaterina Smagliy wrote about Rojansky, then head of the Kennan Institute at the Wilson Center, and noted his close ties to Kissinger Associates, the lobbying company started by the former Secy of State.

1.Latest ODNI revelations re Russian interference in 2020 amplify the key pt of my new book, American Kompromat—that the Cold War never really ended. Former KGB officer Yuri Shvets and I explain (via @strandbookstore event) how KGB first cultivated Trump as an asset in 1980. 2.According to Shvets, reeling in Trump was less a dazzlingly brilliant long-term operation by the KGB than it was a conventional Cold War recruitment at a time when the Soviet Union was seeking hundreds of Americans assets.

In your dreams, @DonaldJTrumpJr. As I show in American Kompromat, Don, Jr. was no slouch when it came to helping out Daddy be an asset for Russian intelligence. 2/ In Paris, in Oct. 2016, Don,Jr. was paid $50K plus for giving a speech at a French think tank. There was just one prob: the think tank was allegedly a Russian front.

1/So you think it doesn't matter much, @JonathanChait? Wrong. If we don't understand exactly how the KGB cultivated Trump, something exactly like it will happen again. 2/If we don't punish get to the bottom of it, in effect, we are saying it's perfectly fine for a president of the United States to be an asset for a foreign adversary, and

On Jan. 26, @DuttonBooks will publish my newest book, American Kompromat: How the KGB Cultivated Donald Trump, and Related Tales of Sex, Greed, Power, and Treachery.
Pre-order now: bit.ly/AmericanKompro… /1 Based on interviews with ex-officials of the KGB, CIA, and FBI, it tells how a relatively insignificant targeting operation by the KGB roughly 40 years ago triggered a sequence of intel protocols leading to the cultivation of Donald Trump as a Russian asset. 2/

2/As I reported in #HouseofTrump, FBI files asserted that Kislin was tied to the infamous Russian mobster Vyachslav Ivankov. Trump's ties to Kislin dated back to the late 70s when he bought 100s of TVs from him for the Grand Hyatt. 3/ Kislin's alleged ties to Russian Mafia notwithstanding, Trump got him to assist in issuing mortgages for condos in Trump World Tower

1/ It's worth remembering the entire context of McCarthy's remarks which @washingtonpost printed at the time. It shows that not only was McCarthy NOT joking, he was speaking in response to a series of events that began to reveal the corrupt core of the Trump-Russia scandal. 2/ As I write in #HouseofTrump, McCarthy's remarks came in June 2016, just 6 days after the Trump Tower meeting, and the same day the GOP House leadership had met Ukrainian PM Groysman, leading Paul Ryan to make the astonishing claim that the GOP was standing up to Russia.

1/Given that he’s being charged with obstruction of justice, the optics are, shall we say, less than perfect. 2/ But right in line with his assertion that he could gun down someone on Fifth Ave and get away with it.
