I also think this shift was inevitable, regardless of Rowling becoming a public bigot

In the same way people reread books from their childhoods and cringe at the racism that wasn't evident to them

I can't stand Rowling but none of my current analysis relies on Rowling She was and still is incredibly popular, these books were always going to get deconstructed

It's just that no one prior to Rowling has achieved this level of global popularity in their lifetime

The thing with Rowling aside from her incredible bigotry is that she expects people's relationship with the books to remain the same

So, of course she sees current criticism in the same way as she saw the Christian moral panic when they came out She wants to believe that "they are very moral books" when they just aren't

non-magical beings are subhuman and basically every squib or muggle who is an actual character is an asshole

It's a phenomenon called genital non concordance

It's not that people want to fuck the soda or even that specific woman

either you become physically aroused bc you see something sexual even though your brain is confused as to why or your brain thinks something is sexy while your body is just completely not turned on

Absolutely not, Frankenstein movies always end up being eugenicist nonsense

Despite the source material very much not being that

I know it's in the public domain so they are cheap to make but it is bigotry every single time It's not even claiming to be a faithful adaptation

There's definitely going to be an assistant with scoliosis

Sure del Toro likes to spin things to have an edgier message

but Mary Shelley did it first, did it best, and everyone after her has just been making ableist garbage

People with dementia are some of the poorest treated people in long term care. They are incredibly socially stigmatized and if their numbers increase significantly as they almost certainly will the apathy and stigma will lead to widespread abuse People with dementia often get abandoned by their families who perceive them as no longer being the people they knew

which creates isolation and warehousing

The only thing that makes me care about the SVB crash is that people who don't understand that SVB was an isolated very poorly run bank for billionaires got scared and almost started a domino crash in normal people banking people hear "a bank crashed" and they worried that it might happen to them and started runs at banks that were fine

luckily for once the government intervened in time to stop another widespread banking meltdown

To be clear, they don't teach this nuance in history class

Most Canadians probably don't know

It's not on the Wikipedia page of Canadian women's suffrage

There's no quaint heritage minute It gets presented as something that just happened in 1918, like that's when the men in parliament got their shit together

British YouTuber: The last time royal ascent was denied was in the 1700s

Me, a Canadian woman who can vote: LOL no, If it wasn't for George V, who the fuck knows when women would have gotten the vote federally Some women were given the federal vote in 1917 because their husbands were fighting WWI

The government tried to repeal those limited rights after the war

I just found out that H.H Holmes who is reported to have killed 100s of people has only 4 confirmed victims and 5 probable additional victims

He confessed to killing 27 people several of whom were still alive at the time

& all the true crime docs are just quoting tabloids He was the kind of guy who probably has a higher body count but definitely not the gruesome level of nonsense attributed to him
