We won!! The UK Government will finally unfreeze housing benefit.

This will prevent and end the homelessness of tens of thousands of people across Great Britain.

You played a huge role in this. This would not have happened without your actions – THANK YOU. People power works! Image The three-year freeze on housing benefit has had devastating consequences. People on the lowest incomes have been completely priced out of renting. Just 5% of properties in GB are affordable to people on housing benefit. We’re pleased the Chancellor has finally listened.

🧑‍⚖️The Criminal Justice Bill is being debated in parliament today. In this Bill are measures to replace the draconian Vagrancy Act, which criminalises rough sleeping. We’ve been clear there is no need for these replacement powers, yet the Government is pressing ahead. (1/6) We’re extremely concerned by these new, punitive measures. Buried in the detail are plans to criminalise people sleeping rough if they don’t engage with help & support. This will only break down trust with services even further. (2/5)

Sleeping on the streets is not a lifestyle choice. We don’t have nearly enough affordable homes & rents are soaring, leaving people destitute and forced to sleep rough. [🧵1/4] ft.com/content/ccf9c2… 2/4 In the last 12 months, in London, there’s been a 29% increase in people experiencing their first night on the streets. This is a consequence of poverty - and poverty in this country has been exacerbated by policy choices. crisis.org.uk/about-us/media…

🎉🥳WE DID IT!! Today the #RegulatetheRogues Bill passed its final stage in Parliament – a huge campaign win! This Bill will improve the lives of thousands of people living in poor quality exempt accommodation run by rogue landlords. Watch and share the good news.🧵 [1/6] [2/6] We’ve backed the Supported Housing Bill to protect people in exempt accommodation and drive out rogue providers that are exploiting residents and undermining the good providers that make a positive impact on people’s lives.

The Bill to stop rogue landlords exploiting people living in exempt accommodation has passed a key test in the House of Lords!
We’re one step closer to transforming lives of 1000s of people forced to live with the misery of unregulated supported housing.
crisis.org.uk/about-us/lates… Image A huge thank you to everyone that has been part of our #RegulateTheRogues campaign so far.

We are so grateful to those who bravely shared their own experiences. And to all of you that have kept the pressure on politicians to act. Thank you❤️

THREAD: Today the Government publishes its rough sleeping strategy which includes some important measures to help those in immediate need on the streets. However, it falls short addressing the root causes of rough sleeping. (1/5) If we're to end rough the problem by 2027, we urgently need to see enough social homes built for those on the lowest incomes and those experiencing homelessness. (2/5)
