Sorry to hear that Danny Kalb, an old family friend and one of America's greatest white bluesmen, died today at 80. His soulful, blistering guitar was the core of The Blues Project in the 60s & 70s If you can spare 11 minutes and 29 seconds to honor Danny's memory, spend it with his magnum opus, Two Trains Running, which also features him on vocals

How Ted Lasso lost the 🧵 A lot of people still aren't ready to admit it but it's clear that season 2 of Ted Lasso is not good, certainly not as good as S1. And I think the reason is everyone completely misunderstands why everyone loved S1.

I've been following this lost cat drama and was reminded of what happened with my cat Straw at college in Oberlin (He was named Straw because I wasn't getting along with my roommate and when I brought him home he said This is the last straw! and moved out. That's not the story) Straw was an indoor/outdoor cat with no collar because I was young and foolish and believed that He Had His Own Fate. He used to follow me four blocks to campus every morning and then turn around and go home on his own. He was a good cat.

twitter is trying really really hard to get me to follow "topics" and the more I refuse the more strange and desperate they get One of the funniest things about Twitter trying to get me to follow topics is that the topic will be something like "arts & culture" or "fine art" and then the tweet will be fan art of Loki

OK my poor memory is driving me crazy. What's the novel that's has what sounds like a very similar premise: a secret society of immortals who are born into new bodies when they die and leave messages for each other across time and are trying to stop and/or begin the apocalypse? Googling points me to a series called The Incrementalists which sounds even more like the book I'm remembering, but I skimmed the preview of it on Amazon and I don't think that's what I had in mind!

There was a terrible crime in my neighborhood early yesterday evening. A retired cop was shot dead on the street. This comes at a time of rising gun violence in NY. The killer was on the scene when police arrived but was not arrested. Why not? (This is like one of those riddles!) I read every article I could find and have tried to piece together what happened. But like the police, the local news seems remarkably uncurious about the killer. In fact, I'm only assuming he was not arrested because none of the news articles even mention it either way.

Uh oh I just realized that my final playlist still has 21 songs on it. There will be a brief delay in posting as I agonize over which one to cut Ugh, this is killing me! You know what, I'm gonna let you choose. For the playlist of Rare Gems (obscure songs that True Dylan Fans cherish and obsess over) which one should I keep?

I know I’m a broken record here but the problem with this argument is that no one can even say what the offensive images are in On Beyond Zebra As far as I can determine it’s 2 or 3 illustrations like this, for orientalism, even though there some very much like it in Oh The Places You’ll Go, which has not been delisted

I'm not saying this isn't true but it's worth noting that these five words are not in the song nytimes.com/2021/02/26/art… NYT: If you are a fan of the Disney+ Marvel series “WandaV "Greed is good" "Play it again, Sam" Many examples of smoothed over quotes but usually to make them work out of context. This is different. Correct but quirky grammar replaced just bc the wrong construction is more familiar

jfc these people are going to claim trump was right about the vaccine timeline. yes, many experts (not just nye, who is a knowledgable observer at best) were too pessimistic, but no one was as wrong as trump You know who got the vaccine timeline right? Anthony Fauci

The Electoral College runs on Google platforms. It's in the Constitution. Google it. It's impossible to make a joke about a conspiracy theory because it almost certainly exists before you can make it and also you might ascribe it to the wrong ideological group

My daughter is 10. She watched videos about Frozen 2 on your site. The algorithm started recommending alt right rants about why there should not have been black people in the movie. Fuck right off with your blood money. I get this impulse but "don't watch YouTube" is neither practical nor sufficient in the long term. White parents have to teach kids about 1) racism and 2) how tech companies manipulate them. Protect kids by empowering them. 7 is not too young to start.

The neverending tour that is #BD969 now enters the 1990s with a new thread. Backstory: I'm listening to all 969(ish) officially released Bob Dylan songs in chronological(ish) order. If you're just joining us here's an unrolled version of Part 1: 1961-1964: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1097693… For whatever reason this thread seems to break @threadreaderapp so Part Two: 1965-1969 is itself in two parts. Here's #BD969 Part 2a:

My #BD969 project -- every Bob Dylan song in chronological order -- now enters the 1970s, which means it's time for a new thread so we don't get tangled up in... tweets. (The thread is going to better than that) If you're just joining #BD969 here's part 1

I may not get much argument here, but out in the world if you say that Bob's original of All Along the Watchtower is superior to Hendrix, people think you're nuts. Hendrix is great-Bob himself considers it the definitive version & has played it that way ever since-but no. #BD969 Supposedly these lines originally came earlier in the song before Bob moved them to the end, creating one of the most ominous moments in pop music history. #BD969

#BD969 - my song-by-song chronological Bob Dylan project - is moving into the pivotal year of 1965, so I am starting a new thread. Remember, he not busy liking and subscribing is busy dying. Backstory: I am listening to all 969* officially-released Bob Dylan recordings in chronological order and tweeting about them with #BD969. You can find part one (1961-1964) in easy-ish to read format here:

It does seem unfair to start #BD969 with a bunch of songs (from the soundtrack of the Scorsese doc No Direction Home) that would be of no interest to anyone if the person recording them hadn't gone on to become Bob Dylan. But there is something cool going on here. You can hear teen Dylan develop rapidly in 2 years, from the fumbling effort of When I Got Troubles, to the attempt at creating his signature vocal style in Rambler Gambler. The badly faked emotions of DInk's Song & the better faked ones of I Was Young When I Left Home #BD969

All day I've been seeing people who literally never heard of Jeffrey Epstein and I just want to remind you that there was once a site called Gawker that wrote about him *a lot* and then something happened and it went away. I'll tell you one person who had definitely heard of Jeffrey Epstein: Donald Trump.
