@glenngabe @RichTatum I mentioned this before in another tweet last week, but I'll try to give more clarity again. Most important, if you're a site encountering a change in traffic and trying to understand why, you should be reviewing ALL our guidelines and docs: developers.google.com/search/docs @glenngabe @RichTatum It's checklist time. Do you follow crawling best practices? Do you have errors reported in Search Console? How are you doing with page experience? Are you doing things we advise against?....

Spotted a @Rivian R1T pickup truck in the wild yesterday on my run. Then a few miles later, came across a second Rivian! Very cool. #rivian ImageImageImage Have been super tempted by @Rivian as we're looking for an EV SUV when our lease comes due later this year. Love the look and range of the Rivian RIS SUV. But no lease option and I think the five seater will take longer to arrive than the seven seater. rivian.com/r1s

@backlon We’ll take a look. I know searching by headline is common for writers and yes, I’d expect this to show first for that. But it doesn’t reflect how most people might seek this content (and for how they might search, I do find it). But again, we’ll look to improve. ImageImage @backlon Here's a follow-up on what's happening & what we're looking at. You do mention this, but it's not clear from the screenshot that your article is the first thing on the page (as shown). Because it's showing in Top Stories, it is getting deduplicated from the rest of the page... Image

And now some of the many costumes I saw along the way running @LondonMarathon — starting with the cupcake that passed me and left me behind. #LondonMarathon Image The fire brigade kept us safe along the sidelines of @LondonMarathon and at one point, within the race course itself :) #LondonMarathon Image

Spent way too much time researching air quality monitors last night. Want outdoor one to better understand what's happening in our immediate area & contribute to maps for others. Want an indoor one to understand what quality is like when we have windows shut. FWIW, my rundown.... Let's start with outdoors. Turns out we have fairly sparse network of official sensors because: expensive! But been huge growth in unofficial sensors by people wanting better local data. Some articles:

I finally canceled my print newspaper delivery. Been putting it on vacation hold ever since COVID-19 began, back when we were hosing down any physical objects with disinfectant. Newspapers don't hold up well with that! It finally weaned me off a print paper. Still, bit sad.... Having grown up with print, I really appreciate the fast glance to take in stories, the serendipity of what I might discover. I'm having to teach myself how to get similar things online and it still doesn't quite feel right. I'll get there...

The family is thrilled that I've now gotten one of those pulse oximeters to take readings along with the nightly temperature checks. Thrilled! Image Pro tip. You don't get the best reading from a pulse oximeter when trying to force your son to use it while playing a game. It's OK. He was 99% when I tried again. Image

Had lovely break this weekend to a mountain cabin, first time out in four months. That is, after we first had to clean the rental ourselves. And more fun as @vrbo still wants to charge us a cleaning fee and kicks the can on that down to @vacasarentals that they rep... When we arrived at our @vacasarentals cabin booked thru @vrbo, nothing had been cleaned despite supposed "extra" cleaning to be done. Kitchen dirty. Floors dirty. Trash in bins all around. Bathroom, fun! So we got to work & cleaned it all ourselves and got on with our weekend.... Image

Good news: @ochealth has launched a vastly improved site with stats on COVID-19 in Orange County. Bad news. Three key threshold indicators for meeting California state reopening criteria are clearly not being met. Here's a tour of what's in the new site arcg.is/1veXG90... Image There's a lot of data in the new @ochealth coronavirus site like daily test & COVID-19 positivity rates, but you can easily miss because to get to new pages, you have to use small tabs at bottom. These don't show on mobile, not even if you use the mobile version of the site.... ImageImage

As a resident of Orange County, it's a nightmare trying to understand from @OCGovCA and @ochealth if the businesses you might go to are following the (actually still required for some employees) mask order or not. Come along for the mess we have..... You're probably aware how the mandatory mask order for residents of Orange County was dropped last week. What was never dropped was a required use in essential businesses: ocregister.com/2020/06/15/oc-… Image

Latest stats for COVID-19 in Orange County show short-term hospitalizations are trending down, though overall trend hasn't flattened yet. More on my page: dannysullivan.com/oc-covid-19-by…

And what's this mean for OC reopening more in light of the state's new guidelines? Likely good.... Image One criteria is that hospitalizations can't increase more than 5% based on a seven-day average:
covid19.ca.gov/roadmap-counti…

If I'm doing the math right, OC is in the 2% range:

Thought I’d share about my masks. I’ve bought some from various places. Here’s a rundown on my favorites and why.... Image Los Angeles Apparel tops my list. Three for $30, fit well, wire inside along the entire top means you can shape to your nose & no fogging of glasses. It’s over-the-head, though, so no easy removal. But I love it. losangelesapparel.net/products/3-pac… Image

You're on a plane that's been hijacked by what seems to be a crazy person who is like we have to outrun the sun or some plague will kill us all and you're like ... excuse me, is the wifi not working? #IntoTheNightNetflix Image There's like 20 people on the plane and this person could sit anywhere but is all like I didn't get my upgrade to first class. The latest COVID-19 figures for Orange County are out & I've updated my page of stats. Hospitalizations down, good sign. But: complicated! Here's a tale of three cities & the complexity of understanding what is happening in a big multi-city suburban area dannysullivan.com/oc-covid-19-by… Image There are about 40 cities in Orange County. Santa Ana is the largest. It had a huge spike in cases a few days ago, now big drop. What happened? Santa Ana has a county jail. Anyone with a case there had counted to the city; today, they now count as "Other" occovid19.ochealthinfo.com/coronavirus-in… ImageImage

So Newcastle upon Tyne people, our neighbor is a Georgie expat, so I thought I'd get a flag and fly it so she could see & brighten things up but it's like really confusing what's the best flag. I mean, well, come along (and then tell me what you think).... I go over to @NewcastleCC thinking surely it would have the Newcastle flag after searching for what it looks like gives me all types of different things. Well, there's the coat of arms which I've seen put on either a white flag or St. George's flag but is that official?.... Image

Latest figures on COVID-19 for Orange County have been posted. Five deaths sadly, highest daily for OC so far. Hospitalizations are our best trends data, dropped a bit from yesterday's high: dannysullivan.com/oc-covid-19-by… Image In terms of hospitalizations, the Orange County has been around 175-190 for the past week. Capacity is around 5,500 beds. I added a bit more about this to my tracking page: dannysullivan.com/oc-covid-19-by… Image

Updated my Orange County COVID-19 page, including city trends. As said before, I feel like countywide hospitalizations are the best metric for trends. Those set a new high and fifth day of climb, but overall count relatively low (190). dannysullivan.com/oc-covid-19-by… Image The @ocregister had a good article today looking at whether the OC hotspot is especially nursing homes, which have had a concerning rise in cases: ocregister.com/2020/04/30/cor…

Apparently the beaches in Orange County have been ordered closed by @CAgovernor. Personally, I wish our local Newport Beach city council had gone for weekend closures. But for some perspective, this is some of Newport Beach right now. It’s not packed.... ImageImageImageImage I am absolutely not a "open it all up!" person. COVID-19 was and is a deadly infectious disease that the shelter-in-place orders have helped us deal with. But this order to override what the local city council decided isn't going to help with compliance....

Our @newportbeachgov city council is deciding whether to do a weekend beach closure now. The meeting can be watched live here: newportbeachca.gov/Home/Component… One thing being weight is if having the beach open correlates to cases in the city. Mayor presents data comparing infection rates for Newport to other SoCal cities with beach closures, with Newport being lower. Image
