The Illinois flag is a mess because Illinois’ identity is a mess. Seriously, beyond Lincoln and the letter “I,” there’s not much the state’s residents have in common. It’s always been that way. Illinois was admitted as a free state but still allowed de facto slavery. It was first settled in the south but grew into a northern stalwart. The Mason-Dixon Line, if extended, would run just south of Springfield. It’s the home of Lincoln AND Douglas
