this will be the start of a very slow thread today on what it took to do this story. it ends with me finding and pulling data from 22,858 court cases by hand so stay tuned lol when i said slow, i meant slow lol. ok so first: how did we get this data? well we had to send open records requests to large cities and counties. that took a lot of time and we often didn't get exactly what we needed.

i suspect most newsrooms don’t truly grasp the full mental health implications the past year have had on their journalists part of the reason i am as open as i am about my mental health on here is because i hope folks with power in newsrooms will take the issue more seriously

here’s a brief thread on decontextualized data and why it’s bad, through the lens of the data collected by my car insurance company for the purpose of determining a discount based on how i drive last night i while driving my truck, the app registered a hard breaking event which i understandably would get penalized for. i did in fact brake quite hard right there so that’s no surprise. Yesterday I had my worst depressive episode since the start of the pandemic. It caused me to cancel my drive out to see my family for a distanced Thanksgiving. I'm still feeling it but I'm much better than yesterday, thanks to the support of family and friends. My meds helped a lot in that they kept the suicidal ideations away. But I have basically been confined to bed since yesterday by the depression. I am so thankful for @jwscoop for delivering me a Thanksgiving meal made by a team that included @jeremybowers. It was a bright spot.

Today, the @washingtonpost is making publicly available the data behind the Opioid Files. And we’re not just making the full data available; we’re also making county-by-county and state-by-state data available as well. washingtonpost.com/graphics/2019/… The data you can download is the raw subset of the data we used looking at shipments of oxycodone and hydrocodone pills to pharmacies across the country. It is not the full data but is quite similar to how experts in the court case looked at the flow of pills into communities.

The DEA keeps a database of where every prescription opioid shipment goes across the country. The full national database has never been public. Until now. washingtonpost.com/investigations… if you're into the tl;dr, here's a look at the biggest findings we had looking through hundreds of millions of shipments over seven years washingtonpost.com/investigations…
