MYTH 1: The State is the sole source of social order.
1/ In the age of social media, it has become increasingly fashionable to rely on censorship to keep the public sphere "safe" from "misinformation." I contend that this approach undermines science, democracy & rational inquiry.
1/ Proposed amendments to IHR subordinate State authorities to the WHO as βthe guidance & coordinating authorityβ during an international public health emergency. The same WHO that praised China's lockdowns, falsely claimed mRNA vax was "safe," & supports coercive vax passports.
1/ Dominant players in Western politics and media frequently respond to robust criticism by employing one or more of the following dishonest tactics:
1/ It is tempting to think that we can promote a more truthful and tolerant society by suppressing false and hateful speech. But we immediately run into a severe problem: society is rife with disagreement. So the only way to suppress falsehood & hatred is through brute power.
1/ The proposed amendments to International Health Regulations *do not require any new treaty.* The amendments are still being negotiated & the WHO aims to finalise them in May 2024. They will be subsequently ratified unless heads of State explicitly reject them within 10 months.
1/ First, the label "far right" is well chosen. It conjures up images of neo-Nazi hooligans or white supremacists roaming the streets in search of their next victim; or hysterical xenophobes full of hatred for foreigners; or Facebook groups devoted to the overthrow of the State.
1/ Crowds gathered in Dublin city centre after a naturalised Irish citizen of Algerian descent set upon young children with a knife on 23rd Nov. People's outrage was understandable. There is nothing "far right" about being outraged at such a horrific assault on innocent children.
1/ What is the evidence that we, humanity, are facing an "existential threat" because of increasing temperatures and other climate changes? And please don't equate the harms of harsh climates or land loss with an "existential threat" to humanity at large.
1/ Carve out times of silence in your day β no radio, TV, internet, or entertainment. Could be walking in a park, sitting in a quiet room, sitting in a chapel - whatever works. This is the only way to cultivate true mindfulness and self-awareness.
1/ ADDICTION:
1/ The emotional & cognitive salience of risk should not be confused with the objective gravity of risk. The fact that a risk is emotionally salient does not mean that other risks should be discounted or disregarded. Emotive assessment of Covid risk produced destructive policies.

2/ Who are the "most vulnerable" people @HMcEntee thinks Ireland's hate speech legislation will protect?
2/ History has already taught us how dangerous this illusion of centralised control can be. Authors like James Scott have documented the disastrous consequences of things like compulsory villagisation in Tanzania, top-down city planning in the USA, & Soviet farm collectivisation.
