so dont panic but its a common misconception that our collective knowledge in books was publicly uploaded to the internet, charitably I'd say you're talking like 10%, maybe less, and now the internet is dying so the best advice I can give is get library cards and a dictionary i have spent my adult life in rare books and there is a reason I have quietly been putting together my own reference library that entire timeβ€” its the farthest thing from redundant. I am not unskilled at navigating the internet but I could see where it was going like a decade ago

so not to be a buzzkill but what survives of english folklore in those areas of the country amounts to 'don't go in the bog, don't talk to anyone you meet in the bog, take nothing you find in the bog' and in that one specific area of my life I am a firm traditionalist in other countries it might be different, but if you go face down in an english bog then the body that leaves the bog might look a great deal like yours but it is unlikely to be you inside it

okay but this is actually central to the plot. Sauron is continually unable to comprehend the idea that someone might willingly forego power, it's his sole Villainous Weakness this is not some kind of cinema sin or blooper, it's a commentary on the nature of evil

Sauron consumes as a matter of principle, and is baffled by the notion, the very IDEA that you might throw power away or destroy it in favour of a nice garden

it's the whole plot

ran a D&D one shot last night and though the plot was as simple as 'fetch me the item at the bottom of the well with the help of a friendly gnome' we got to "guys guys if rigor mortis sets in we can fashion the gnome's corpse into a crude fishing hook" before I called it a night they blame it on me and say my 'presence' brings out 'a darkness' in them but frankly all I did was provide the gnomes and a bleak twilight universe that tacitly encourages amusingly gormenghastian choices

there's a whole conversation here about how queerness evolves and changes based on time, place and context, and how even what might now be considered problematic depictions still had (and may continue to have) a special meaning to people I don't trust anyone who thinks their interpretation of queerness is the -only- acceptable lens through which to view it, to embrace queerness is to accept the fact that you belong to a complicated family with a fluid and subversive history
