I'm hearing that federal employees with student loans are going to get an bonus windfall benefit out of the Biden loan cancellation policy... The federal government pays up to $10,000 a year on the student loans of federal employees (there's a separate program for congressional staff). These payments are made directly to the loan servicer and have been ongoing during the pandemic payment pause. opm.gov/policy-data-ov…

Today, remember this 2021 @usedgov legal memo on why the president does not have the authority to execute broad based student loan forgiveness. I have yet to see the Biden admin explain why this @usedgov Office of the General Council memo was wrong. static.politico.com/d6/ce/3edf6a39… "Title IV’s plain text and statutory scheme, and controlling interpretative canons, compel us to conclude Congress appropriated funds for student loans with the expectation that such loans would be repaid except in very specific circumstances."

I never thought at age 42, long after earning two degrees, I'd be setting up a 529 college saving plan -- for myself. But Congress just tucked a few lines into a giant, year-end, last-minute omnibus spending bill that gives me an incentive to do this. The spending bill included a bunch of provisions related to the tax treatment of retirement plans. And, in lawmakers ongoing obsession with throwing money at people who have student loans (whether or not they need it) they put this in there. appropriations.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/…
