Today marks Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration of the liberation of Black enslaved people in the U.S. On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that Black people in the state — the last area to abolish slavery — were freed under the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. Across the state, liberated Black people abandoned their sites of enslavement.

Prison firefighters earn time off of their sentences, typically two days off for each day served. Sgt.
