on july 17 2019 i flew to LA. just 13h after leaving my job.

my entire life in this bag. i told people, that i'll go on some travels. and i wasn't starting a company, really. but i did.

a personal story. i was sitting in venice. sketching and drawing the very beginning here.

11 months ago i had never designed a product. 3 months ago i had never designed brand.

before that, i blew $11k+ for designs. all because i thought "i am not good enough".

We've brought tens of thousands of people on our waitlist in 2 months. Now we want to hire someone to do more of that. I always found job descriptions super boring.

here are my last 24h and pretty happy with the consistency. there are a few startups building this. they sell users on technology, when all they do is a brand battle.

they’re relying on white-labeled sensors from the same company.

not quite sure what to think of giving people this false impression.

i think we don’t talk enough about whatsapp‘s design.

it’s a phenomenally designed app. it literally works just like you think.

one put their pms has told me that they have to test features for 12-18m. all to be sure that their billions of users get along with those features.

not to mention the impact it has o. everyday lives.

it’s the main way for my family to keep up with what i am doing.

Virtually all organizations install PMs to solve user problems.

In my eyes product is a meta job. Every person in your organization that doesn't think about the user slows down the rest. Never thought titles matter much. It turns out _naming_ matters a lot.

It made a huge difference to adopt "they" instead of assuming a gender.

In this case we've renamed our Software Engineer position to Product Engineer.

Nearly no one knows the humble beginning of @tryamie.

It was scrappy. And started out with me coaching 30 friends on their habits.

I created a WhatsApp group with each of the testers. They always send me a picture. This confirmed they've done their part. This was the chat with @WieandtEduard. He wanted to get up before 6:30 every day.

The toothbrush was a sign of "I won't go back to bed".

Messages are timestamped, so I was always sure he had achieved his daily habit.

Everybody in the startup world advises you to build a world class team.

The problem is that those people rarely give examples of what that means.

There's always a before the startup story. Some startups get planned in a spreadsheet and others happen organically.

Here's what ultimately led to coco.so The story of flying to LA right after quitting my job @n26 From June to August I was experimenting a lot. I became the habit coach of 35 friends.

This is me helping @WieandtEduard get up before 6:30. He sent me his toothbrush in our coco WhatsApp group.

I held him accountable and motivated.

Learning 27/90: On finding unique insights. Talking to your users is obviously good advice. But it doesn't help so much with what to talk about in the first place.

Yes it's about them and their experiences anyways. Before talking to users, you should figure out your world view. Why should your product exist. In my case I made one strong realization (which will get a separate post). I wasn't reachable Monday through Saturday and so didn't get the usual rapid feedback from friends/ colleagues.

For my unique insight this was important.
