1/ We launched a business during lockdown and hit INR 1 Crore in MONTHLY revenue (and $1M+ ARR) within just 5 months.
This is a thread on how we did it. 2/ We had launched @the_betterhome in Feb 2020 as a kit of non-toxic floor, dish, laundry and toilet cleaners. Our offering was in two forms - a 6-pack & an 8-pack kit. Our packaging was minimalistic. We shared it with the lovely community of @thebetterindia

1/ I like to help people. And this is a trait imbibed in me by my dad. This thread is about how he did it. 2/ Dad started at the lower end of the financial spectrum. With 6 siblings and not enough for a day's meal let alone college fees, he would double-up selling tickets at the ticket counter of the Bangalore Turf Club. That paid his college fees.

1/ As a startup founder, not enough is spoken about how your personal finance gets hit badly.

When you startup, you let go of a well-paying job and the salary that comes with it. Your monthly income is no longer stacking up. 2/ You then get some traction, using up your savings and try to raise a seed round. Assume you get a seed round, you finally start taking some salary but it will be only to cover your costs. Hence still no savings and you’re already at least 2 years in.

Financial stuff that I wish someone had told me during my 20s. If you are in your 20s, this may help you get financial security earlier than anticipated:

1/ Start saving at least 30% (more the better) of your income right from your first salary. 2/ Be disciplined about saving by having an auto-deduction mandate on your bank. That way, you won't miss even a month of savings!

3/ Spend and manage your expenses only AFTER you've put aside the savings amount for the month.

THREAD: In context of the recent @TechCrunch article on "Married couples are a startup's secret weapon", sharing @AnuradhaParekh and my experience in building @thebetterindia together:

1/ Married co-founders' success happens if the two have extremely complementary skills 2/ One of us is good at ideation/executing early-stage experiments. The other is good at helping those ideas/experiments scale-up massively by putting in the right processes. And these roles reverse at times too.

1/ Thread on revenues:
A better way to increase the chances of success for your early-stage startup? Start making revenues.
The best way? Start making profits.
Achieving either will indicate that you are moving towards product-market fit and hence becoming viable. 2/ Very few startups need to be in a "market leader" mode right from the beginning. In fact, most early startups can exist side-by-side with competition and yet thrive. And hence, the need to focus on revenue in addition to market share.

1/ It was 2008 when @AnuradhaParekh and I started blogging - writing about the small acts of change being done by people around us. The idea @thebetterindia was to bring a new perspective to media - to celebrate progressive movements, which was never done at a large scale. 2/ In 2008 - we wrote once a week
2009 - twice a week
2010 to 2013 - thrice a week
2014 - every single day, team size 3
2015 - 2 stories a day, team size 4
2016 - 4 stories a day, team size 8
2017 & 2018 - 20 stories a day, team size grew to 30 (and a fabulous team at that!)
