I continue to think ā€œMolochā€ is basically a misleading concept My track record of trying to explain what bothers me so much about the idea of ā€œMolochā€ in words is that I repeatedly cannot my own ITT here, but with that caveat itā€™s probably time for me to try again

So for ages now Iā€™ve had a chip on my shoulder about something about game theory and something about peopleā€™s proposals about plans to jump across adaptive valleys and perhaps most of all about the term ā€œcoordination problemā€, which makes me want to scream šŸ˜± I think I have a somewhat better handle on why. For all I know this is all stuff Iā€™ve exactly written in a twitter thread so where already, but I think not? And if itā€™s nothing new then cool, at least itā€™s sitting differently in my head these days.

Oh hmm this is also maybe a good jumping off point for trying to work through a thing thatā€™s been on my mind lately re: grinding vs strategizing in games Took me forever to find this, but its v related. I think thereā€™s one more thread Iā€™m supposed to weave in before I start trying to theorize moreā€¦

Starting to more strongly intuit something about conjugate being more real than episodic, but Iā€™m not sure if Iā€™m on the right track or doing down a šŸ‡šŸ•³ Which in my mind comes out to the same thing as this fwiw šŸ¤”

Okay, December is mostly gone, but I still want to do a threadapalooza thread about gumptionology, even though no one exactly assigned it to me (and it feels overwhelming!)

Plan is to do 100 tweets on it, and I will interrupt liking this post as cheering on that intention. If you click through the tweet above twice, you can find a decent chunk of the passage from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance about gumption, and I recommend that as a good starting point for thinking about this stuff that is wiser than anything I expect to say about it.

@nclaurence Oh man, you make me want to write a book to try to (still incompletely) answer your question!

I can say some stuff about what worked for my family, but ultimately this stuff is pretty individual. Also feel free to DM me to talk about all this more. @nclaurence I am probably on the very low end of babies having schedules, but I donā€™t particularly recommend that in general. It worked for us though! I had a moment when my now almost 90yo was 3mos old and I was trying to get her to go to sleep, and I mostly resolve to stop doing that.

Iā€™ll try. QTing to thread.

Just now I tried trying to lay out my perspective around 5x, to myself and out loud to a friend, and itā€™s way less articulate than I wish it were. But Iā€™ll try. To a first approximation, about attachment theory and trauma seem to present life in the womb as some sort of perfect wholeness where the babyā€™s consciousness has yet to be shattered.

2500 followers and Twitter has been quite fun and engaging so far!

Follower milestone AMA time!

And introduce yourself if you want in the replies :-). It felt important to me to tweet about covid early on, when it seemed both urgent and neglected.

So the sense of purpose was nice, but I donā€™t find news cycle tweeting that intrinsically rewarding, even though it seems to get more engagement.

Copied about pasted from a FB comment I made, a thread.

I have a bunch of issues with the linked article !

One is that 7 have died on the diamond Princess so far. But a bunch are still in critical condition. Itā€™s true that most places have some uncounted mild cases, and itā€™s also true that anywhere where cases are growing means most of the infected who will die havenā€™t died yet.

Regardless, this is very contagious and the ICUs will get overwhelmed, at which point death rates go up.

And my other assignment from vgr is 100 opinions on mainstream parenting, whether anyone likes this or not :-). I probably canā€™t do them all in one sitting, but Iā€™ll start anyway. Big caveat that mainstream parenting isnā€™t a single thing, and my perception of it is presumably all kinds of flawed. I do not have much depth of knowledge about mainstream parenting.

I've thought a ton about parenting over the past ~7 years, and here's what I've mostly settled on as my "parenting philosophy"...

Epistemic status: variable confidence on the different points, attempt to do a very basic breadth-first pass of things that seemed important to me. 1. Treat kids like people

Maybe obvious but not just an applause light. Tweak the person model until it covers kids too instead of special casing them.

It's cognitively expensive to do this, but AFAICT it paid dividends in all my relationships, not just my ones with my kids.
