Do these people know absolutely nothing about Tchaikovsky? He was descended from Cossacks and spent most of his summers in Ukraine. He lived in Ukraine full-time for 4 years when he was in his late 30s. His symphonies and operas are chock full of Ukrainian folk themes.
Listen to the opening bars of the 1812 Overture. They're based on a style of liturgical chant in a distinctive Kyivian style. There are Ukrainian folk memories in "Mazepps," in his 2nd symphony & at least one piano concertos. And there are memorials to Tchaikovsky in Ukraine.
