This is the story of Old Drum, the dog who many believe inspired the phrase "man's best friend." a close-up look at the face of the Old Drum memorial statue. the pup looks up and to his left a bit with clear eyes, as his oversized ears flop gently on either side of his face. the statue has etched swirls and loops in its surface to suggest the soft and fluffy fur of the original. In October 1869, a foxhound named Old Drum was shot and killed by a farmer who was having trouble keeping his flock safe from predators. The farmer, Leonidas Hornsby, was sick of the constant threat of dogs and wolves and swore to kill the first dog that appeared on his property. a blue street sign is labeled “Old Drum Rd.” in bold white lettering. a light road leads diagonally through the photo, with farmland on both sides.

We posted our very first dog rating 8 years ago today! Time flies when the dogs are so good. Thank you to anyone who has ever shared a post of ours. It is such a joy to be a part of such a loving community ❤️

I’m threading below my favorite posts from every year we’ve existed! 2015 a screenshot of a tweet from WeRateDogs from 2015. the text reads: “This is Pipsy. He is a fluffball. Enjoys traveling the sea & getting tangled in leash. 12/10 I would kill for Pipsy.” the photo features a fluffy blond dog sitting on a pier with cloudy skies above and a few large boats floating in the background. the dog’s leash is wrapped under his chest and gets lost in the fur before swooping out behind him.

This is Smoky. She was World War II’s littlest soldier and the first therapy dog on record. In 1944, a U.S. soldier found her in an abandoned foxhole in the New Guinea jungle. She soon became the travel companion of Corporal William Wynne… a black and white photo of a tiny yorkie sitting inside an upturned soldier’s helmet. she’s smiling with her tongue out. the pup is barely taller than the boots that are off to the side. Smoky served with Wynne in the Air Force, where she joined on combat flights, backpacked through jungles, survived a typhoon, and once parachuted 30 feet through the air.
the little yorkshire terrier sits between two people in a jungle. the person on the right is dressed in a military uniform and is throwing his head back in a wolflike howl while smoky does the same.
a tiny pup, mostly in shadow, falls from the sky wearing a teeny tiny parachute that billows above her in white. her legs are out wide, and we’re going to guess she’s a pro at this.

This is Hachikō. He was an Akita born on Nov. 10, 1923 in Japan. He was sold to Hidesaburo Ueno, a scientist at the University of Tokyo. Ueno named him Hachi after the number 8, which is considered lucky in Japan, and the two became inseparable...

Every day, Hachi walked to Shibuya station with Ueno for his commute, and he returned each evening to pick him up. This routine continued daily until May 21, 1925. On that sad day, Ueno left for work and never returned, after suffering a fatal cerebral hemorrhage while lecturing.
