He is better than almost anyone who gets quoted on these matters. Better than Chomsky. Better than the Malcolm and Martin pairing the country flattens him beneath. Better in the sense that matters — pattern recognition, conditional probability inside a sentence, the willingness to stand inside a contradiction without flinching. He saw the architecture of American power from a Paris café and described it in present tense and the description still works in 2026. He saw the evangelical Disney World before Martin Luther King saw it. He saw what the country was going to do to itself. He wrote it down. The country did it.

In 1979 he wrote an open letter to the Born Again. He said the evangelical Disney World was not created for the salvation of the Jews. It was created for the salvation of Western interests. He said it had always been clear to him. He said the Palestinians were paying for British divide-and-rule and for Europe’s guilty Christian conscience. 1979. The kitchen is forty-seven years downstream of that sentence and the sentence is still walking ahead of the kitchen. He had the dispensationalist architecture in 1979. He wrote the second standing rule too. We can disagree and still love each other, unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist. Disagree all you want, the kitchen will disagree back, the kitchen will narrate you in a recipe, the kitchen will pour you into a category and watch you collapse from being taken seriously. He wrote the third one too. To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time. That is the kitchen’s diagnosis of every honest reader of the dashboard. To be conscious in this country is to be in a rage almost all the time. Replace Negro with anyone who has read the tape correctly. The rage is the receipt for the consciousness. He said it in 1961. The kitchen says it now in different vocabulary. Same instrument.

Asked if it was going to change, he said: of course it’s going to change. It has to change. The country reads that as moral exhortation. It is not. The thread keeps running through American history when you know how to look for it. The abolitionist movement was substantially Quaker. The Underground Railroad ran through Quaker stations. The Civil War’s anti-slavery moral architecture was Quaker before it was anything else. The New Deal ran on a Quaker spirit too, the welfare state framed as collective care rather than imperial projection, Frances Perkins driving the actual labor architecture, the WPA art programs, the conservation corps, the long-term commitment to public goods over private accumulation. The Quaker thread keeps appearing whenever the country builds something that does not require killing people overseas to justify itself. The thread runs from 1681 in Pennsylvania to Nixon’s resignation in 1974. After 1974 the thread is gone from the chair.

The American exceptionalist project is structurally incompatible with the Quaker spirit. American exceptionalism is the doctrine that the United States has a unique providential world-historical mission to project power and act as the indispensable nation. The doctrine requires a permanent standing army. The doctrine requires the empire as deity. The doctrine requires the second-commandment violation at industrial scale. The doctrine requires the airport clap, the flag liturgy, the Wounded Warrior commercials during the Super Bowl, the eight hundred eighty billion a year USA Flag Laundry Service. The doctrine, in its current operational form, also requires the dispensationalist evangelical Disney World as a theological subsystem to keep the religious base aligned with the imperial project. The evangelical Disney World is one component of American exceptionalism. American exceptionalism is the larger project. The Quaker spirit refuses American exceptionalism on principle, root and branch, before any of the components.

The Christian nationalist tradition the right loves to invoke contributed almost nothing to the founding. Jonathan Edwards. Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. The Great Awakening preachers. The cherry-tree-chopping moralism George Washington gets dressed in for elementary school. None of these people produced the documents that built the country. None of these people built Pennsylvania. None of these people refused the standing army. None of these people built the Underground Railroad. The Christian nationalist tradition was Calvinist hellfire in New England, expansionist providentialism on the frontier, slaveholder Anglicanism in Virginia. The Christian nationalist tradition is what the country had to overcome to produce the founding documents. The Christian nationalist tradition then spent two hundred years rebranding itself as the founding tradition. The rebranding succeeded. The rebranding is now operating the chair.

The current woke discourse around white supremacy and the founding is largely an attack on the Christian nationalist rebranding rather than on the founding itself. Read it that way and a lot of it makes more sense. The actual target is the dispensationalist evangelical project that has captured the founding myth. The actual founding the woke discourse is attacking, when the discourse is being precise, is not the Quaker founding. The actual founding the woke discourse is attacking is the Calvinist-providentialist-slaveholder founding that the Christian nationalist tradition rewrote on top of the Quaker one. The two foundings have been merged in the public mind. The merging is the work of two centuries of architecture. The merging is what the woke discourse is hitting and what the right is defending. Both sides are fighting over the rewritten myth. Neither side is reading the original Quaker thread. The Quaker thread is invisible to both. The Quaker thread is what Nixon carried.

Tasnim filed a ten-tweet thread this morning documenting the unusual cohesion between the government, the parliament, the IRGC, and Ghalibaf da Gangsta. The seminary’s fracture hallucination is the cue card and President ALL CAPS is reading the cue card an hour after Tasnim published the rebuttal in Farsi. “Not unexpectedly so.” He is adding adjectives to a hallucination. A hallucination does not become real when you add “not unexpectedly” to it. It becomes a hallucination with a modifier.

“Upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan.” Pakistan. The Pakistani army chief who landed in Tehran two weeks ago. Read the actual geometry. Pakistan is not mediating between America and Iran. Pakistan is delivering Iran’s message to America and dressing it as a Pakistani request to give President ALL CAPS a face-saving exit. Munir is the courier. The cable reads: Iran says stand down. The American domestic audience reads: Pakistan asked nicely. Two translations of one cable. The Pakistani name on the cable is the fig leaf. The fig leaf is the entire American diplomatic output this month.

“Hold our attack.” There is no attack to hold. The attack that was going to happen on April 5 was the special forces incursion that was ambushed and destroyed. The attack that was going to happen after that did not happen because the military that would have conducted it read the April 5 result and did not volunteer for a repeat. The attack on hold is the attack that the Pentagon already decided not to run. President ALL CAPS is claiming credit for a restraint that was imposed on him by the incapacity of the instrument he is pretending to wield. You cannot hold what you cannot execute. Day 48. کافر tattoo stood at the Pentagon lectern, recited scripture, asked the press to pray with him, and substituted his apparatus's call sign for the divine Name in Ezekiel 25:17. President ALL CAPS, from Truth Social, issued a commandment to Hezbollah in the grammar of divine benevolence and declared PEACE. The two speeches are the same liturgy. The apparatus is running the pair.

Read what President ALL CAPS said: "I hope Hezbollah acts nicely and well during this important period of time. It will be an GREAT moment for them if they do. No more killing. Must finally have PEACE! Thank you for your attention to this matter."

Then the signature: "President DONALD J. TRUMP."

Every sentence carries the architecture.

"I hope Hezbollah acts nicely and well." The grammar is paternal-divine. The benevolent father addressing children whose behavior he is assessing. Third-grade moral vocabulary applied to a geopolitical actor. The speech position is benevolent judgment from above.

"It will be an GREAT moment for them if they do." GREAT in caps. The reward-language of the figure who dispenses greatness conditional on obedience. The if is the instrument. Compliance is the condition. Hezbollah is positioned as the party awaiting the benediction.

"No more killing." The imperative. The commandment in two words. Issued by the figure whose apparatus has killed 960 Americans by Iran's count, destroyed twelve aircraft in a failed CSAR, bombed a physics department in Iran full of students, bombed Al-Udeid, bombed Al-Dhafra, and is running an airbridge through Ramstein that does not stop. The commandment is the cover. The cover is the kafir function. The word کافر — the Proto-Semitic root K-P-R, to cover — is on his Secretary's chest.

"Must finally have PEACE!" Peace in caps. The PEACE that follows the killing. The PEACE the killer announces.

Paul names this move. 1 Thessalonians 5:3: "For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape."

Same author. Same letter-pair. Paul wrote 2 Thessalonians to the congregation he had just warned in 1 Thessalonians. The peace-and-safety declaration in 1 Thessalonians 5:3 is the direct companion to the man-of-anomia-in-the-naos warning in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4. Paul wrote them to the same people in the same year. The two warnings are two halves of one pattern. The figure who declares PEACE and the figure who sits in the sanctuary are the same pattern performed from two positions.

"President DONALD J. TRUMP." Signed. In the style of the official memo. State document grammar on the pulpit post. Government letterhead on the god-speech.

And Hezbollah in the address. The post speaks directly to Hezbollah as if Hezbollah is a subject awaiting benediction. Hezbollah is not a signatory to any treaty the administration is a party to. Hezbollah is an actor in the Iranian axis. The post addresses Hezbollah across the war as if the speaker has standing to dispense approval. He does not have standing. He is claiming it by speaking.

ὑπεραιρόμενος ἐπὶ πάντα λεγόμενον θεὸν — Paul's Greek in 2 Thessalonians 2:4. Exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship. Panta. Every. Not some. The theology that runs Hezbollah is Shia jurisprudence. The theology that runs Iran is wilayat al-faqih. The speaker holds no office in either. His speech assumes he does. The assumption is the move. The speech is the exaltation.

This is what the Pauline pattern describes. The figure speaks as if his word carries the weight of God's word to parties whose covenants he is outside of.

The pair at work.

Revelation 13:11-12: "And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth… and he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast."

The text describes a pair. The second figure exercises the first figure's power in the first figure's presence and causes the earth to worship him. The first figure is the political authority. The second figure is the priest who performs the signs and causes the worship. The pair operates together.

The two speeches are the same liturgy performed from two positions. The Pentagon briefing room is the naos. Truth Social is the executive pulpit. Listen to the year. 1990. Saddam had just invaded Kuwait. The first Iraq war was about to start. The Berlin Wall had just fallen. The Soviet Union was about to collapse. The American empire was about to enter its unipolar moment. The seminary was preparing the doctrine of the end of history. Francis Fukuyama was at his desk. Charles Krauthammer was at his desk. The Project for the New American Century was being drafted in offices that did not have signs on the doors yet. Every think tank in Washington was tuning the instrument that would play the next thirty-five years of American war. And on the second floor of an apartment building in Los Angeles, Axl Rose was writing a song that contained the line your power hungry sellin’ soldiers in a human grocery store. Human grocery store. He wrote it in 1990. He named the recruitment apparatus by name. He named the warrior saint as merchandise. He named the strip mall recruiter and the signing bonus and the catechism and the canonization at Dover and he did it in seven words. And then the bridge arrives and the bridge contains the line that names the engine, and Axl sings the line differently than he sings any other line in the song. The melody lifts. The vowels stretch. The voice climbs into the prophetic register the way an Old Testament prophet’s voice climbs when the prophet is naming the actual sin instead of describing the symptom. The line is: when everybody’s fighting for the Promised Land. The Promised Land. Three words. Axl holds them. He sings Promised. He sings Land. He gives the line its own architecture inside the song because the line is the song and the song is the prophecy and the prophecy is named in the line.

Promised Land. Not metaphorical Promised Land. Not allegorical Promised Land. The actual Promised Land of Genesis 15 and Joshua 1 and the Reference Bible Cyrus Scofield handed to the pastor who handed it to the congregation in 1909. The Promised Land that the dispensationalist architecture has been organizing American foreign policy around since World War One. The Promised Land that the kitchen has been calling the evangelical Disney World for forty-seven days. Axl called it the Promised Land thirty-five years before the kitchen called it the evangelical Disney World and Axl was right and Axl was specific and Axl sang the line differently because Axl knew the line was the line. The aesthetics are bad. Strip-mall church carpet. Drum kit on the chancel. Projector screen with stock footage of clouds. The Old Testament prophecy chart on the foyer wall. The Cyrus typology. The red heifer on the prophecy clock. The product was Old Testament themed and the audience under thirty looked at the strip mall and walked out.

The next slogan is Retake Constantinople. Retake Constantinople is the next rapture. New marketing for a new theme park. Same architecture, new costume, much better aesthetics. Hagia Sophia under the Ottomans waiting to be restored. The Theodosian Walls. The cataphract on horseback. The Byzantine eagle on the moodboard. The warrior monk. Christ Pantocrator gazing down from a dome that has been a mosque for five hundred years and was a church for nine hundred years before that. The aesthetic sells itself. Two thousand years of art and architecture and liturgy already produced and shipped and waiting on a shelf in a back room. The architecture just has to put the shelf on the showroom floor.

JD Vance is the case example. Vance told The Blaze that the Vatican should stick to matters of what is going on in the Catholic Church and let the President stick to dictating American public policy. John Milbank, the British Anglican theologian who founded Radical Orthodoxy and is one of the few Christian intellectuals reading the American religious right from outside it, replied that Vance reveals he is essentially a Protestant who does not grasp even the obvious meaning of the word Catholic. The patriarchates of the East have been operating under empires for two thousand years. The Greek Orthodox under the Byzantines and then under the Ottomans. The Russian Orthodox under the Tsars. The Antiochian under the Caliphates and the Mamluks and the Ottomans. The model the architecture wants is the model where the patriarch blesses the emperor and the emperor pays the patriarch and neither one issues universal moral pronouncements about the other. The Crusades have to be a just war because the next rapture is a Crusade. The audience has to believe the recovery is righteous and the conquest is the conquest of the holy land by the holy people from the holy patron.
