Economics is, at its core, a discipline of uncomfortable truths. It requires explicit comparison between feasible alternatives under real constraints, rather than reliance on idealized outcomes that reflect what is socially desirable or rhetorically appealing but often unattainable in practice. A central objective of economic reasoning is to discipline intuition and reduce social desirability bias—the tendency to support policies because they sound good, signal virtue, or align with moral intuitions, rather than because they are likely to generate desirable outcomes once incentives and constraints are taken seriously.
