The MCDM model isn’t replicable, but I want to remind folks that the company exists bc of @mattcolville’s free YouTube channel. An experienced designer built community trust for years, asking nothing in return, ran one KS which went so big it allowed him to form a company,
1/ The company immediately brought on colleagues from the game world full-time and gave them competitive pay, insurance and benefits. MCDM is transparent about their freelance rates (some of the best in the industry), does not require NDAs, and does open development via Patreon.

Hi. I’m the person who asked this question, and this isn’t entirely accurate.

🧵

I had decided from the moment I received the invitation that I wasn’t going to talk about my attending until after the summit for many reasons— —my own concerns about my own health, travel and in-person gatherings, the hope story of harassment and abuse of creators in this space, my own desire to have time to collect my thoughts and questions without outside influence or input, and many, many other reasons.

Woke up today and just…I don’t have it in me today to go through another day of the screaming and violent rhetoric and mob mentality and abuse.

This industry is behaving like feral warmongers and is going to ACTUALLY get people hurt.

It has to change.
1/
Be angry. Be unconvinced. Be concerned. Be delighted. Be optimistic. FINE.

But today, if you can, take a moment before hitting send and remember there are actual human beings reading what you say. That we have the choice to have a discussion rather than a screaming match.

I truly don’t know how to emphasize strongly enough JUST HOW UNACCEPTABLE IT IS to target individuals in everything going on (and folks, singling someone out by name in a critical post/video IS targeting them right now).
1/
Right now, keep in mind that a small but very angry group is actively seeking out those posts/videos, and a small subset have been responsible for the threats (which have to be taken seriously, that’s how these things work) against both employees and other creators.

All right, let’s do a 🧵 about the D&D For All Kit I helped design with @Wizards_DnD. I’m incredibly proud of this project, and I want to highlight some of the thought that went into ensuring this kit was accessible and inclusive.
1/ A box with four red segment... This project took about a year, and I worked closely with the spectacular @djdubow, who tirelessly advocated for it and the features we included, as well as several other folks on the Wizards team and the wonderful folks at FlightDeck Studios, who made the kits a reality.

A 🧵 of links for disabled folks who need to find accessible ways to protest or organizers who want to ensure access and inclusion:
1/ 26 Ways to be in the Struggle, Beyond the Streets. (A List) by the great @SFdirewolf, whom I’m thinking about and sending love to today.

I’m really thrilled with how this character has evolved over the months we’ve worked on her, but I’m even more thrilled by how James has made inclusion and accessibility part of his core operating framework for design on everything he’s done since we started working together. 🧵. Herja’s chair is definitely designed to be a spectacle piece—it’s ONLY for the arena and is meant to intimidate her enemies, but we kept the focus on Herja herself, not her chair—embellishments, like the weaponized wings, act as costume pieces for her look (cont’d)

Oh, I feel this pain. Some of my discoveries along my dungeon design/mapping journey for D&D follow. A 🧵.
1/ Graph or isometric graph paper, working and modifying preexisting maps, using @hexcrawl’s Jacquaying the Dungeon article, and/or playing in @inkarnaterpg are some of my favorite strategies.

LRT: I’ve spoken about this before a bit, but let’s talk about my engagement ring, and why it was arguably the most important $20 I spent last year. (Thread.) Fairly early on in the pandemic, like most disabled people, I recognized the increased danger that I was in, not just from the virus, but from ableism. 80% of doctors believe disabled people have a lower quality of life.

A quick thread on fantasy wheelchair design, since I've been giving the same note repeatedly on several different projects recently.

Before you make it cool, make it practical.

1/
Giant, throne-like chairs with big weapons are awesome in theory, but they ignore the essential function of a chair--to give a person mobility and equal access. An armchair-sized device is nearly impossible to maneuver, won't fit through doors, and is immensely heavy. 2/

So, one for the “how do we tackle this issue in the industry” list: work over the weekend.

People are entitled to days off. Recognizing that not having them is:
a) a major contributor to the burnout we are facing, and
b) challenging because so much of our work is after hours, How do we find ways to get freelancers regular days off? No shows take hiatus at the same time. Projects email constantly, with endless follow-ups. I’m trying to track messages/threads/projects across, at minimum, eight communication platforms.

Last night, I talked about what I loved about 2e. Tonight, I want to talk about what I love about 5e.

Five things follow.

(This is a long thread, because there's a lot to love. I don't cover it all here, but these are some of the main things.) 1) The versatility. 5e gives the flexibility to have a maps and minis tactical campaign OR a cinematic, Theater of the Mind epic OR a campaign that has features of both. It has huge, expansive stories that span continents and tiny tales that can be told within a small town.

CW: Really gross ableism

Summary of this morning:
I was using my wheels today—pain in my hip and POTS stuff. I had an appt. with my cardiologist. I was sitting in the waiting room & a guy strolls in and starts wishing everyone a great day. He is loud, but seems well-intentioned. Next, he, having walked past, but facing away from me, starts saying to people “Hey, things could be worse. You could be in a wheelchair. It could be raining and you could be in a wheelchair. You could be on the bus and the driver dropped you too far and it could...
