Every church I know is paying close attention to the safety of their members and communities as they plan the stages of regathering. Almost all of them are telling members what benchmarks they will watch, in consultation with up-to-date public health information in their areas. Most of us want more than anything to be "back to normal." But regardless of when a church is re-gathered for worship, some things will be changed for a very long time.

Holy Saturday prompts me to lament, once again, the loss of something few of us ever think about at all: church graveyards.

At one time, many congregations worshipped right next to their cemeteries. Now, almost never.

Here’s what I think is behind all that. A church graveyard is a signpost, first of all, of our union with Christ. Jesus joined us in every stage of the human life, from embryo to corpse and beyond. A graveyard reminds us that he went, for us, to the place of the dead, and overcame it.

Good Friday should remind us of the persistence of illusory power.

Herod wanted to demonstrate loyalty to Caesar. Pilate didn’t want popular disapproval. Many of the people wanted Barabbas, a resistance fighter, instead of One whose kingdom is “not of this world.” The Roman state dressed him in fake “kingly” costume in order to make fun of him.

Onlookers ridiculed his appeal to his Father, sure that he was cursed by God and thus lacking any power at all.

The death of any person is a tragedy. Hugh Hefner is no exception to that. We can't though w his obits call his life "success" or "a dream." Hefner did not create, but marketed ingeniously the idea that a man's life consists in the abundance of his possessions and of his orgasms.
