Gov. Gavin Newsom repeatedly claimed last week that California enacted a rule to require new cars be “100% zero-emission by 2035.”
This is false. His administration knows this, but they keep repeating it. Let me explain: 🧵🧵
The rule approved by the Air Resources Board allows automakers to sell 20% plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2035 (other 80% must be true EVs). In other words, 1 in 5 new cars could still have a gasoline tank.
At best, California’s rule will require 80% zero-emission new vehicle sales.
