I learned today is that a boycott is called a boycott because an English land agent named Charles Boycott was in charge of collecting rent from Irish farmers and he was so unpopular that someone was like “alright, no one acknowledge he exists!” and everyone was like “bet!” That’s an oversimplified history, the whole thing is pretty great. irishcentral.com/roots/history/…

I haven’t worked at TVO for about 9 years but I deeply care about the place. First, I was disappointed with how management treated workers through the strike. BUT this statement is genuinely infuriating. Now I’m mad.

Lemme just talk about it for a minute: politicstoday.news/queens-park-to…
Image After TVO and the union came to an agreement that included buyouts for some folks, it would’ve been so easy for TVO to take a crack at common decency and issue a boiler plate statement — hey, thanks for your service, we’re sad to see you go. Right?? Oh is that what you THOUGHT? Image

All my rowdy friends (are leaning towards mask mandates again) I know we’ve talked about the pandemic being an alternate political reality but since the dissolution of the last mandate, the accepted wisdom was that mandates are politically toxic and that era was done. And then COVID simply said: lol you thought????

Let’s gooooooo (if theatre 1 service allows) The only update I have is that I saw that clip of Taylor and Sadie doing some red carpet shots, and to get to the red carpet area in the atrium, they both would’ve been briefly very visible and somehow no one noticed????? It was surprising!!!! That area is not like… not hidden

V. weird vibe to be talking about The Letter in the DMs but not talking about it publicly so let's flesh out some stuff.

The letter has become a story in and of itself. But the point, as I understood it, was to draw attention to a lapse of nuance in covering Palestine/Israel. Particularly, missing nuance when it comes to representing Israel and Palestine as equal forces, or representing the uneven fighting as “clashes” between matching powers. They are not. Trevor Noah did a good job covering this: theguardian.com/culture/2021/m…

Premier Ford is once again focusing on variants and borders. I wonder if they have some internal polling that suggests this is resonating, because they've been using this line for *weeks* at this point. Okay, this is a bit preposterous? Ford keeps saying we'll work hard to make sure the variants don't come in(????). This government knew variants could spread in February, and they made several deliberate decisions that were counter to expert advice on how to slow the spread (???)

“It feels like we are losing her to an addiction.” Man, @JaneLytv did her excellent thing and talked to family members of QAnon believers. No story about the QAnon delusion hit me as hard as this one. buzzfeednews.com/article/janely… One person, about her mom: “Occasionally, I become emotional because we can’t have any normal conversations anymore."

Another, on her best friend: "We've gotten through life/death situations. Together....I've lost my best friend. I don't think she's ever going to come back.”

New from me: the pandemic meant an increase in housework. In straight marriages, that labour has fallen mostly to women.

An expert said, "I don’t think it’s that fathers are trying to skirt their labor... It’s the effect of a lot of small interactions.”
buzzfeednews.com/article/elamin… This piece is having a bit of a ~ moment ~ so let me say a few things about it. First things first, the replies have drawn in "that's misandry!" internet, which is gross and to be expected, but also drawn in lots of "noooo shit" internet, which is fair and to be expected.

A semi-serious question: just by virtue of being forced to pay attention to so many things, at a certain point, the # of new cases a day might become...background noise. A number you see and don't necessarily even register. What volume of new cases could become "normal" to you? Judgin' by the tweets of today, the number sure as hell isn't 313 new cases a day. But could 100 new cases a day blend into the background, and not incite panic for you? 150?

Finally got around to this, and it's so good: "We went to Nortel in Ottawa, and we told the executives, ‘They’re sucking your intellectual property out.’  They didn’t do anything.” bloomberg.com/news/features/… "In 5G alone, Huawei has spent $4 billion in the past decade, more than the total invested by its Western rivals combined. Every fifth 5G proposal vetted by the international standards-setting organization is from Huawei, more than any company..."

The evidence so far suggests Trump's appeals for the suburbs aren't working, but Democrat strategists are worried about that the verdict isn't in yet. politico.com/news/2020/09/0… "A strategist described a focus group in which white, college-educated women reacted to the protests by discussing their property values and, in one case, the family’s mortgage.

'White women who have college degrees are starting to really get sick of this,' the strategist said."

Bit o' background to the Morneau stuff if you're just joining the 'why is the finance minister holding a presser at 7:30 pm???' crowd. Reuters has this great backgrounder on how Morneau and Trudeau disagree on coronavirus spending: cbc.ca/news/politics/… Also there was this item about how the PM is getting advice from Mark Carney, albeit informally cbc.ca/news/politics/…
