@8bit_bb @june_seattle @Bob_Wachter I don't think that's the whole story.

1) Since normalcy is being manufactured, people are taking signals from government/others around them, thinking "hey if X is saying and acting like things are ok, the risk must not be THAT bad." Same situation with climate change

1/? @8bit_bb @june_seattle @Bob_Wachter 2) Long covid isn't being discussed much, and I don't think people are aware of its prevalence and severity for folks with mild symptoms or asymptomatic. And how chances go up more times someone is infected

!! @mer__edith's work reminds me of @GeoffreySupran & @BenFranta's work re the "fossil fuel industry's invisible colonization of academia."

These issues are connected. Big Tech has deals with Big Oil “collectively worth billions” to help “churn out more oil" using AI.

🧵 "Fossil fuel interests have colonized nearly every nook and cranny of energy and climate policy research in American universities, and much of energy science too. And they have done so quietly, without the general public’s knowledge."

Amazon fired me and @marencosta.

As Mary Oliver wrote, "oh! how rich it is to love the world." It's a gift to be able to fight for something you love so deeply.

All I know is that we need each other. And that we can do this.

PS I love you. How we respond now to covid… what we value, *who* we value, will become a model, a reference, for how we behave, who we value, who we protect, etc etc in the climate chaos months and years that are coming at us fast. 2/

I'm matching donations up to $500 to support my Amazon warehouse worker colleagues. "The lack of safe and sanitary working conditions" puts them and the public at risk.

It's bad ya'll...

THREAD Here're some things we're hearing form Amazon warehouse workers.

Crowded together, hundreds of Amazon warehouse workers pass by each other at the end of their shift.

I'm a designer and tech worker at Amazon. For over a year, dozens of my @AMZNforClimate colleagues and I have been publicly speaking out. We organized thousands of us to walk out in Sept for the Global Climate March.

Yet, @monteiro's piece doesn't sit well w me. Let me explain. First, some additional context. The *day* after we announced internally our participation in the Global Climate Strike, Amazon updated its external communication policy. And then... well, @marencosta and I recently spoke on record about what happened:

I've been thinking a lot about @MaryHeglar's thread. I agree with her. And...

When people ask climate activists, "What gives you hope" I think they may actually be asking, "What makes it possible for you to do what you do? And can I have some of that?"

THREAD 2. I don't think they have the words for this yet though. So they attempt to learn this (clumsily) by asking "what gives you hope?"

Such good news: "the current fossil fuel system runs at a loss, and will amass losses every year."

The world's 8th largest bank, BNP Paribas, says: "The economics of renewables are impossible for oil to compete with when looked at over the cycle." Read their report.

Oil's days are numbered. 👇

"The economics of new wind and solar projects combined with EVs are set to become irresistible."

"Renewable electricity has a short-run marginal cost of zero, is cleaner environmentally, could readily replace up to 40% of global oil demand."

The climate crisis poses *significant* financial risks to Amazon. And not just in the usual ways one expects, like disruptions to business operations.

What and how big are these risks? Investors need transparency on Amazon's risk assessment and management plans.

The moral reason for climate action has deeply resonated with Amazon employees. Over 6,700 Amazon employees have *publicly* signed their name to our open letter asking for bold, immediate climate leadership.

I’m one of the Amazon employees who filed the climate shareholder resolution.

Same week Shipment Zero was announced, @bcmerchant reported Amazon, Goggle & MS have deals with oil companies, “collectively worth billions” to help them “churn out more oil.” gizmodo.com/how-google-mic… Amazon isn’t hiding this. No, it has a whole website dedicated to MARKETING to OIL COMPANIES explaining all the many ways Amazon can help them extract oil better and faster. Website is even called “AWS for Oil & Gas”

I'm one of the Amazon employees quoted in this NYT article.

I want to add to @kateconger's reporting and provide more context on WHY I decided to take this action and to be so public about it.

Climate change is the issue of our lifetimes. 1/X

nytimes.com/2018/12/16/tec… As @RevYearwood so eloquently put it, climate change is about "HUMANITY," about justice. It's also an issue of our national security, health, safety, economy. Climate change is changing & will change everything. It's effecting everything we care about. 2/x
