I’m at a town hall in Fremont with Alameda County DA Pamela Price.

Event moderator, of the ACLU of Northern California, notes that 40% of people in Santa Rita Jail are mentally ill and 25% are seriously mentally ill.
Exclusive in my latest column: The wealthy city of La Cañada Flintridge is using SCOTUS’ affirmative action ruling to fight a builder’s remedy project. Its argument: CA’s fair housing law, aimed at integrating exclusionary areas, is unconstitutional.

In other words: building affordable apartments is racially discriminatory — mostly against rich white people.
La Cañada Flintridge is 60% white & 1% Black, w/ a median home value of $1.7 million. It hasn’t approved a multifamily project in over a decade. sfchronicle.com/opinion/articl…

My latest column: Democrats' recent votes on high-profile criminal justice and housing bills sent a glaring signal that some members are increasingly willing to sacrifice everyday Californians on the altar of ideology, even when it means denying reality. sfchronicle.com/opinion/articl…
The notion, upheld by the Assembly Public Safety Committee, that it isn’t a serious crime to traffic children for sex or labor is so absurd as to be laughable if it weren’t for the gravity of the situation. sfchronicle.com/opinion/articl…

.@GavinNewsom accepting education award in Washington, D.C.
I'll 🧵 his comments —
.@GavinNewsom says California's education budget alone is larger than the entire budgets of all other states but 2.
"What we do has consequences," he says.
"We practice pluralism -- you don't hear that word in our culture a lot today," he says.

SCOOP: @GavinNewsom is on vacation in Montana. His office had been loath to disclose the location until now.
Montana is one of 22 states to which CA bans state-funded travel due to anti-LGBTQ+ policies. It's also likely to institute an abortion ban.
NEW: Assembly Democrats, helmed by @Rendon63rd, are forming a Select Committee on Gasoline Supply and Pricing to investigate "gas-price gouging."
"Californians need more than Band-Aid relief from high gasoline prices," Rendon says.
CA's gas excise tax is set to increase July 1
Rendon says the committee plans to investigate 2 main questions:
1- why are gas prices so high? 2- what can we do to stop it?

🧵:Senate Judiciary Committee hearing @Scott_Wiener's bill to allow minors to get vaccines w/out parental consent.
Speaking in opposition is a single mom of 6 who says her son got vaccinated at school "in exchange for pizza," against her wishes, and has experienced side effects.
"I feel that, in that age, they still don't have that mentality ... to choose if they're OK or healthy enough to make that decision," the mom says, adding that she now fears her son could die at school, and he wakes up at night struggling to breathe.

.@GavinNewsom at Planned Parenthood Los Angeles: "I want to express my outrage about the decision the Supreme Court appears to have made about rolling back our constitutional rights. ... At a time when countries are expanding rights, America is about to roll back rights."
"Don't think for a second this is where they stop," @GavinNewsom says. "If you think it affects someone else over there -- it affects you. The right to privacy affects all of you. ... You think the right to same-sex marriage is safe? Give me a break."

.@GavinNewsom: it appears we have overwhelming no vote today.
We said yes to science, to vaccines, people’s right to vote without fraud, women’s constitutional rights to decide what she does with her body
I’m humbled and grateful to the millions of Californians who voted overwhelmingly to reject cynicism, negativity, @GavinNewsom says

Oakland Mayor @LibbySchaaf said Newsom is "creating one of the greatest CA budgets we have ever seen."
I believe this is the first time in months @GavinNewsom has worn a suit during one of his public events/press conferences -- signaling he's stepping things up. "I'm about to make an announcement, arguably, no other governor in America has ever made," he says.

"They're now required to do new things on vegetation management, updating grid, sectionalizing grid to be more precise for when they turn off/on power, weather monitoring stations, infrared evening capacity, procure personnel that are required."
