Recently, when searching on Google Flights, I noticed that when I sorted by "less emissions," I kept getting a Boeing 737-Max 9.

I wondered: Why is that? And does this mean lower-emissions planes are less safe?

I sent a reporter to get answers. Here's what she found (1/X) 🧵 The 737 Max was Boeing’s solution to a green competition problem.

Airbus had developed new, more fuel-efficient engines that it was sticking in old planes.

Boeing’s airline customers wanted to save on jet fuel. So they were threatening to drop Boeing for Airbus.

NEW: Vivek Ramaswamy, who claimed he could speak truthfully on climate change b/c he's not "bought and paid for," has a $50M+ stake in an investment firm dedicating to drilling as much fossil fuels as possible.

The main fund is literally called DRLL.

PragerU made a grand announcement to its entire following that it has been approved as an educational vendor in Texas schools.

It's a complete fabrication, the Texas state board of education chair tells HEATED: heated.world/p/prageru-says… Below is the response we got from the Texas board of education chairman.

He says PragerU has no working relationship with him and has not submitted any materials to the SBOE for approval Image

Last month, Tennessee passed a law labeling methane gas as "clean energy"

It has *huge* repercussions for effective climate action in Tennessee and could be a model for other states

No national media outlet has covered it yet

Follow along to learn more 🧵 Tennessee's new law, HB 0946, states that public utilities must count “natural gas” (industry term for methane gas) as a “permissible source” of clean energy

This means that ANY town or city that wants to set clean energy requirements must include fossil fuels in that definition

In the first 3 months of 2023, the world's 4 biggest climate-polluting investor-owned companies made a combined $32.6 billion.

That's enough money to

-End world hunger for nearly a year
-End U.S. homelessness for ~4 years
-Fund FEMA’s budget for ~3 years

But that's not all... The combined first-quarter profits of Exxon, Chevron, BP and Shell in 2023 could also

-Buy flood insurance for every home in Louisiana
-Protect Virginia from sea level rise until 2040
-Fund the entire disaster relief and recovery for Hurricane Michael

It's quite a lot of money.

If you let any story cut through all the Twitter noise today, please let it be this:

At least six local news websites across Alabama and Florida have been secretly taking payments from power companies to run stories attacking clean energy + other policies
npr.org/2022/12/19/114… Power companies like @alabamapower and @insideFPL have funneled nearly $1 MILLION to local news outlets to ensure they get positive coverage

They're taking advantage of the fact that local news is struggling to push their pro-fossil fuel agenda

OK, I read the Bret Stephens climate piece in the @nytimes. And I have some thoughts. 🧵
heated.world/p/a-new-york-t… 1. Stephens publicly denied the severity of climate change for 10+ years.

It's great that he now accepts it is real and dangerous, but this piece contains no remorse for, or even reflection on, the fact that he spread climate falsehoods for over a decade.

As an active and lifelong participant in the beauty industrial complex, this interview with @jessicadefino_ was tough — but also incredibly eye-opening.

A quick 🧵 of the major themes: heated.world/p/the-beauty-i… We talk a lot about the environmental harms of fast fashion, but beauty (skincare, makeup, hair products, injectables) is almost never included in the picture.

That’s wild when you think about how much non-recyclable plastic is created for each product heated.world/p/the-beauty-i…

Last night I went on CNN International and said that wealthy white people will likely be more protected from harmful climate change impacts than non-white people.

I got *a lot* of messages like this from people who do not think that’s true.

So let me explain why I said it. 🧵 An EPA report from last year found that Black Americans are 40% more likely than other racial groups to live in places where heat will cause more deaths.

They are also 34% more likely to live in areas where childhood asthma diagnoses will worsen.

Good morning from the west coast, where I’ve been *repairing my mental health* for the last few months! Recovering from burnout (aka capitalism-induced depression) was a lot harder than I expected. But I learned a lot — primarily, that I cant do my job alone anymore. So… I’m turning HEATED into a newsroom!

First hire: an enterprise reporter — someone to become a major voice of the newsletter alongside me

Newsroom leaders who say climate change is “difficult to cover” b/c of its “depressing outlook,” I’d ask:

Are you being super clear, in every story, that the main cause is fossil fuels?

Are you being super clear, in every story, that the main solution is to replace them? Mainstream news is getting better about covering climate change more!

But it’s not getting much better about explaining why it’s happening.

They mostly blame the elusive “carbon” produced by “humans.”

It’s rarely “fossil fuels,” which produce 80% of carbon emissions/year.

BREAKING: House Oversight Committee will issue subpoenas to Exxon, Chevron, Shell and other oil majors for internal documents showing how they fund climate disinformation, @RepMaloney says .@RepMaloney says the committee "tried very hard" to get Big Oil to voluntarily hand over information on their funding of climate denial organizations, and the companies refused.

Instead, she said they gave 1,000s of documents that were mostly publicly-available annual reports.

Gonna test out some headlines for today's climate change hearing, let me know which one you like best/feel free to suggest your own GOP Successfully Turns Climate Disinformation Hearing To Big Oil Bootlicking Jamboree
Oct 28, 2021 6 tweets 2 min read
In an emotional tirade, GOP Rep @ByronDonalds says @RepMaloney's request for Big Oil to pledge not to fund anti-climate lobbying is "disgusting," says China is the real problem, disparages climate activists, and thanks the oil industry for providing fuel for cars. He says nothing about the actual subject of the hearing, which is whether Big Oil companies lied about the deadly climate consequences of their core product to delay policy action that would have prevented widespread ecosystem collapse because they didn't want to lose profits
Oct 28, 2021 6 tweets 2 min read
Reminder: This is a hearing examining whether oil companies engaged in a coordinated campaign to downplay the deadly, costly effects of their main product, and if they should be held accountable for it.

This is *not* a hearing about banning oil, as each GOP rep is claiming. So far, the GOP has only questioned oil CEOs about things like Keystone XL, the Green New Deal, and banning oil.

They have not attempted to ask them about, or even defend them from, the core claims that they lied about the deadly climate impacts of their products.
Oct 28, 2021 8 tweets 2 min read
The GOP's strategy at this hearing is clear: It will not attempt to claim Big Oil *didn't* mislead on climate.

Instead, the GOP is claiming Democrats are wasting time by focusing on climate change, and that it isn't important to "everyday Americans" In his opening statements, @RepJamesComer talked about immigration, Afghanistan, and the pandemic. He did not mention climate change.
