There’s been a lot of response to @ryangrim’s piece on progressive nonprofits and their current challenges, at least some of which ring painfully true to many of us. Some thought it was all about staff/mgmt. issues, some thought it was all about race. I have a few other ideas.
1. 4 years of Trump fucked people up 2. 2.5 yrs (so far) of pandemic REALLY fucked people up, & made much of our usual work impossible. We’re still coming out of that. 3. The racial justice uprisings gave a good shove to work that was already necessarily underway in many orgs…

In an op-ed I'm sympathetic to, this sentence implies an odd spectrum: "Empathetic viewers might want to see a character embrace her singleness, even if an actual lesbian pairing is too much to hope for." Historically, it seems...

...clear that singleness was often chosen by those who could repress their desires, or who had no other choice. But it's by no means a spectrum, and independence/singleness can compel/befall those of any orientation.
