1/4 Data on COVID-19 testing is crucial, but definitions are messy, sources are hard to check, and figures change quickly.

We are trying to build a scalable database. We have so far time series data for 26 countries with thorough source descriptions here: ourworldindata.org/covid-testing 2/4 We have made a checklist on the key comparability and data quality issues to keep in mind when collecting and using this data. These are the questions that we try to answer when we compile the data for each country.

1/ The question of whether COVID-19 deaths are accurately measured is something I’m trying to understand. This is not something I see discussed enough. Much research and analysis seems to assume deaths are accurately measured.

Here’s a thread with what I’ve found so far 👇 2/ There’s a general perception that deaths are measured more accurately than cases. While this is likely true, it doesn’t mean COVID-19 deaths are particularly well measured.

It’s not a straightforward question at all: Some factors may bias death counts up, others down.
