The catholic church is under assault in #Nicaragua by the Ortega/Murillo regime. The US has announced further sanctions. The situation continues to deteriorate. @USCCB expressing solidarity is fine. Now how about strongly condemning regime actions that violate basic human rights? Including freedom of religion, among others. #Nicaragua is now a brutal dictatorship. There has to be a stronger response than this, especially when your own leaders are being persecuted. Ortega is no icon of social justice, if he ever was (he wasn’t). Stand for truth, please.

Test your #Venezuela knowledge:

The person who "declared himself president" is:

(A) Juan Guaido
(B) Nicolas Maduro

The answer? B, of course. Maduro held a fraudulent election in 2018 and based on that declared himself president and re-inaugurated himself in early 2019. Guaido asserted his prerogatives under the terms of the Chavez-established constitution, which says that the individual holding his congressional leadership position becomes interim president when the presidency is abandoned. Maduro's mandate ended when his term expired in 2019.
