I do think it would be worthwhile for academic historians who've never worked in public history--in the minimum-wage part of it where you interact with the public directly all day--to spend a month working in that capacity. There's always more to learn about communicating.
I had worked in the field before getting my PhD, but it had been a while, and I think recalibrating what it means to talk about history effectively with someone when you have them for 15 minutes, not a semester or a book, was my biggest challenge. I think it might be yours too.
