The tariff announcement by President elect Trump is an attempt to set the negotiation table before he gets sworn in. It is a smart tactic. Fortunately, it is likely not much more than that if we are smart. A few thoughts. 🧵 In 2017, the ‘Welcome to Canada’ tweet, the ‘progressive trade agenda’ & speeches by Min Freeland and PM Trudeau in the US were attempts to virtue signal & contrast Canada & the US. It was noticed and led to very poor relations.

My post congratulating the new CDS who also happens to also be the first woman to become a 4 leaf General led to a torrent of toxic and stupid posts and it gives us a small glimpse of what women have to put up with online. A few elements really bothered me. 1/4 First, General Carignan has an impressive career of tours and command assignments. Compared to many of the top Generals from 1960-1990 period she has far more operational experience, yet many were questioning her credentials. That is brutal. 2/4

One of the most remarkable & heartbreaking war stories I was ever told by a Veteran during my public life was the story of the Barnard brothers who landed together on Juno Beach on #DDay. A🧵 1/8 Image Fred and his younger brother Don grew up in Toronto and were very close. They made the decision to join the fabled Queen’s Own Rifles together & they deployed overseas together as brothers fighting for 🇨🇦. @QORMuseum 2/8 Image

There are two roads open to the Conservative Party of Canada. One is the road of Randy Hillier and Derek Sloan. It is angry, negative, and extreme. It is a dead-end; one that would see the party of Confederation become the NDP of the right. 1/5 The other road is to better reflect the Canada of 2022. To recognize that conservatism is organic not static and that a winning message is one of inclusion, optimism, ideas and hope. 2/5

In an interview on the 1 year anniversary of the Liberal government’s Twitter diplomacy dispute with Saudi Arabia, I said that if Canada has no relationship with a country then we cannot raise important human rights, diplomatic or rule of law issues with that country. 1/5 We have serious concerns about human rights, the war in Yemen & other issues with Saudi. I raised these issues & spoke about the challenge dealing with countries we share interests with but don't share values with. I have raised this since the start. 2/5

Many Canadians have only recently become familiar with the Admiral Norman affair, so here is a recap of the case and political interference from the Trudeau government that I describe as Direction, Deception & Delay. 1/6 Direction - the breach of trust charge stemmed from a cabinet leak related to attempts to halt a $700M contract. 73 people were aware of the leak but for over a year only Admiral Norman lost his job & had his name given to the RCMP for investigation. 2/6 ottawacitizen.com/news/national/…

A (somewhat) brief history of Team Trudeau and two major legal matters. 1/23 Oct 2015 - Justin Trudeau elected Prime Minister and hires key Ontario Liberal Party advisors Gerry Butts & Katie Telford for top positions in his PMO. 2/23 nationalpost.com/news/politics/…
