great to see this passionate, critical discussion on libraries & public space!

detailing a few clarifications here for those interested, particularly to public librarians whose work, expertise, & struggle i deeply respect. as many point out, public librarians are overworked/underpaid/precarious (just like many educators, adjuncts, service workers, gig workers, mechanical turks, & a growing sector of the labor force). in addition, western isolation is a deep rooted cultural problem with no quick fix

what if public libraries were open late every night and we could engage in public life there instead of having to choose between drinking at the bar and domestic isolation maybe we wouldn’t be so addicted to these screen things if we had accessible, inviting, and stimulating public spaces to feel seen, connected, included, and nourished?
