Abortion rights folks had been trying to warn you for so long. Because society failed to take the anti-abortion movement (a totalitarian movement) seriously, now it's everyone's problem. Let's settle in for a chat about anti-abortion fake clinics, also now everyone's problem. 🧵 Anti-abortion fake clinics exist to mislead and shame people seeking abortion care. They also form the backbone of the anti-abortion movement's power. Don't be fooled into thinking these are grassrootsy efforts. They are not. (More on that later.)

The struggle for abortion rights and for racial justice are deeply interconnected. I would like more white people who are interested in abortion rights to deepen their racial justice analysis for the abortion issue specifically. Controlling gender and sexuality + reproductive oppression operate in service of white supremacy by working to increase the supply of white babies. It is also intentional that the people most hurt by this "pro-life" approach are people of color, especially Black women.

There are two things happening at once with regards to the role and prominence of overt anti-abortion hatred in right-wing politics, and it's important to pay attention. This will have broad-reaching implications for the longterm politics of abortion. (THREAD) FIRST: It has long been the case that Republicans who want higher office bend over backward to be the biggest, loudest, most cruel anti-abortion leaders they can be. One example is South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, who absolutely wants to be president. abcnews.go.com/Health/wireSto…

This is the perennial story about women in power — Senators, CEOs, non-profit leaders, editors, and now, vice presidents. Women are presented as too weak, too strong, too indecisive, too bullying. It serves to push out the good women leaders we have, and intimidate rising women. In particular, this odious statement from someone too cowardly to use their own name is so sexist and racist I’m going to spell it out in detail:

There is no such thing as a pro-life feminist. And thank you, I majored in Women's Studies and was literally a national officer for the National Organization for Women.

None of this is surprising. Sending people to jail is and has always been the #BigProLife agenda. THREAD: When a would-be justice asserts "life begins" at fertilization they are arguing for Constitutional personhood, a term that makes abortion and birth control illegal. It means even the potential of pregnancy has more constitutional rights that the actual people who can be pregnant.

Do NOT give up.

This is NOT a done deal.

I've been thinking a lot about Sylvia Plath novella Mary Ventura and the Ninth Kingdom, which nods toward one of the most valuable things that can happen for women: when women speak openly to younger women about what's ahead, and join with them and guide the way to better paths. In that spirit, I'm going to say openly say something that I haven't before:

THREAD: What does it matter if a committed group of sexists lies about abortion and keeps shaming and tricking people who need reproductive health care?

#BadFaithMedicine First and foremost, it's a travesty for patients seeking abortions that a group of people buying medicine coats at the costume shop is lying to them and trying to run out the clock so they can't get the care they seek.

A "pro-life" mass gathering is scheduled to take place indoors. In Florida. In September.

Even Donald Trump, who seems to have zero regard for many Americans will die from COVID-19, figured out he couldn't do that and cancelled his event there.

Cancel, " @inspirelifenow "! The anti-abortion movement, which claims to care about "LIFE," continues to harass patients, providers, and communities outdoors, and engage in doorknocking and other events without social distancing. Sometimes they just laugh off COVID like it's NBD.

THREAD: A Catholic-affiliated hospital that has received $25 million in federal funds in the last two years denied a transgender man the hysterectomy he needed to thrive. Now he is suing to combat that discrimination. metroweekly.com/2020/07/transg… via @metroweekly A spokesperson for the University of Maryland hospital network tried to make this all be OK by claiming other hospitals in the network without the Catholic affiliation do provide care to transgender people. That's an insult, and not community-based care without stigma and shame.

While holding my job, I homeschooled my daughter for 60 days from March 13-June 12, with 6 days of Spring Break in between that I treated like summer camps that I have been running daily ever since, 21 days total. She completed first grade. I’d like to help you understand hours. On homeschooling days I would lay her requirements against my schedule and the weekly messages from the teacher. This is about 8 hours per week, added to 6 daily hours helping her learn (play not included). So this is 38 h/week not including being her only playmate.

To be clear, the government forces institutions to give a speech against sex work in order to provide life-saving HIV work. Not good policy that will have real consequences around the globe. So much to unpack in Kavanaugh: "foreign organizations operating abroad have no First Amendment rights."

WOW! BIG! STRUCTURAL! CHANGE!

Can’t wait to see a new model of community-led public safety coming out of Minneapolis. I’m proud of the city. It will always be my hometown. 💗 Activism matters.

A better future is possible.

Disbanding Minneapolis Police is a huge step toward healing and building systems of keeping people safe that actually keep people safe.

Didn’t read this until now, because I wasn’t ready. Last night I cried through dinner discussing how my generation of moms is being pushed out of and/or downgraded in the workforce. Tbh, the commentary from childfree feminists on here is stifling. thelily.com/i-had-to-choos… If you think this is about marrying the right man, you’ve got it so incredibly wrong. That is one tiny, oddly shaped piece of the puzzle.

*Note, I’m going to use heterosexual marriages as default here, because that IS where I’m hearing about the most problems.

My kid is 6. If they sent us no additional material, we are good to go until sometime in October or November going full-time through the summer.

Note to non-parents: This is not like set it and forget it. This is she needs constant help or direct instruction all day long. I have so much empathy for people who are bored out of their minds and craving human contact. The working parents in your life are in another universe. We are not reading books or running out of shows to watch.

We don't have time to brush our hair.
