So there's this logical hiccup people make due to enculturation, because we have been conditioned to believe hiccups in life are our fault.

If you get divorced or have a mental health issue and you're middle class and insured, you don't usually lose your home. But if you're poor and those things happen, often there's no cushion or safety net to keep you in housing.

Yet people still say those things "cause homelessness."

Clearly not! Poverty plus high housing cost cause homelessness.

I encourage everyone to think a lot more carefully about what the word "political" means. All of these things are political. Political is not synonymous with compromise. Politics is the process by which we decide how to allocate resources in society. Racism is political. White supremacy is political. Fascism is a political ideology.

The thing about the "property damage is violence" narrative is that you are equating corporate assets with human survival. This is why comparing cop cars or broken corporate business windows with people's homes is also wrong. Punching up vs punching down. The point of property damage as protest is to fight power, not harm people with none. But a lot of people have been conditioned to believe corporate and state power are people I guess.

My daughter the cog psych PhD student and I were talking yesterday about how people double down on decisions about people and issues rather than examining them in general. Yeah I slipped a brag in, sue me. Anyway the idea is that once you decide on something or percieve you've decided on something, you'll defend the decision past reason.

@branewurms @FoxyLeftist @absurdistwords So here's the thing. Whiteness is about purity right? It's not a heritage.

I'm white, my heritage is pretty mixed (although the Scottish influence was culturally the greatest). I pass the heritage to my kids, but not the whiteness. @branewurms @FoxyLeftist @absurdistwords Because my husband is Asian American, my kids aren't white. They are still Scottish and English and Irish and German, but not white.

So see the distinction there? I passed on heritage, but whiteness is something different.

We were talking about this last night in a discussion about my daughter's thesis, which is on show up suspect IDs. Even though evidence is clear that they are problematic police continue to use them. In California they can't be the main form of witness ID but police will do a show up first (where they bring the witness just the suspect they just detained and ask "is this the guy?" And then do a lineup. But that's still leading!

Conspiratorial thinking is a brain function, it is a good thing to have when the opposition is up to no good and danger is high, and a mental illness in most other contexts. I am not in general a high conspiratorial thinker but when I'm high I can come up with some doozies 😂

Hi, smart people? When you're infected with covid it's inside your live cells using their machinery to reproduce, the virus in your saliva is just shedding. You can't cure covid by killing the virus outside your cells. Can you kill the shedding virus by disinfecting your mouth, washing your hands, etc? Maybe but that won't stop the active infection and your body is still making more virus.

Unless you're also talking about the fact that being gay was also illegal everywhere in the USA at times and people went to prison for dancing and holding hands I do not want to hear concern trolling about Castro from you. I mean the USA are not the freedom fighters here

If the parents could have been adults they probably could have figured out how to make this a learning experience instead of a competition between them.

Ask what makes 13 year old boys act out like that, it is usually emotional distress. I'm a big believer in natural consequences, which this approaches, I just don't think the kid will ever understand it because the adults made it about their relationship.

To me it's impossible to understand what's happening in America right now without understanding that we have a dominant culture that is on the cusp of losing hegemony with the death of the older generations Image You can see how the older generations became more capitalist and the younger generations became more socialist over the last decade

So something thwt happens to women on Twitter and in real life is that men who think we should defer to them will try to convince us we are unworthy to engage with them as equals. I'd hazard a guess that every woman has experienced this to some degree. But the thing is they really believe it, and so other people will back them up. This is one of the methods by which social hierarchies are maintained.

I'm surprised so many Americans really don't understand even a little bit how much of the world was colonized by Europe, and how much harm it did to their stability. I generally talk about it with the assumption that people understand it but I think maybe most people don't at all. I shall endeavor to teach.

I've been meaning to tweet about addiction vs dependence vs tolerance *again* so I'll do that over here while Erynn is doing her thing over there (we tweet about different things yet the same things, it's very weird). So how do you know if you're addicted to a drug? This is a question I don't know how to answer. But I can tell you several things people think are addiction which are not addiction- they require different treatment modalities.

Remember I wrote a thread a while back about how the cold War generation was raised to fear the left and right equally? We were promised that we'd be safe in the center.

And now we are bringing up socialism again and that scares people. I want to clarify a few things. When you mention socialism most people think... What? USSR, China, and Venezuela? Guerrilla warfare? Cuba? I don't know, I didn't really have a clear idea of what it meant, but I knew everyone in socialist countries was miserable.

Punching Nazis is specific. It is not killing or shooting Nazis. It is not bombing Nazis via mail (and thus endangering blue collar workers). It is not dropping bombs on Nazis and their neighbors or sending military to do so. Thus, left wing violence and right wing violence are qualitatively different.

Why does a girl saying no turn into embarrassment for a boy? Maybe we should unpack that bit of conditioning. Boys have a right to ask and girls have a right to say no. Considering that a deep humiliation seems silly to me, and encourages guys to dig in rather than shrug it off.
