It's the ridiculous belief among ADULTS that just because someone is fast with UI widgets and touchscreens, that they have any real understanding of computers.
The belief in "Digital Natives" by educators/parents has done a lot of harm.

Two genuinely nice high school boys stepped forward as co-leads of the robotics teams. In the back of the room I saw a girl standing behind the boys. “Did you do robotics last year?” “Yes” she said. “Then we have three leads now. Big smile and she stepped up through the crowd.
Change is gradual but it can happen.

I'm on a twitter hiatus right now so won't be following up on this thread much but @hwoodmusic just asked an important question (which I get asked a lot) and I wanted to take a moment to respond:
"how to handle violence in D&D with middle schoolers"
First, I don't avoid violence or combat in the game. I do avoid TYPES of violence. I also encourage creative problem solving at all stages. And finally, I often suggest alternatives (or create alternatives) to opponent/creature death during combat.
