THREAD: Late last night, ICE revised its COVID-19 detention protocols to end requirements that it perform COVID-19 tests on all detainees at intake, transfer, or release, and that it quarantine detained people upon intake. (h/t @Haleaziz). . Some thoughts: The new protocol—now 17 pages down from 49 -- eliminates wide protections for detained people, especially medically vulnerable. There are no more specific protections, screening, or tracking of people who are medically vulnerable to COVID. ice.gov/doclib/coronav…

Thread: The GAO just publicly released a blockbuster new study on ICE’s detention contracts under the Trump administration. It is a must-read for anyone who cares about immigration detention. gao.gov/products/GAO-2… /1 The GAO found that in the last 4 years, ICE spent billions opening new facilities without proper justification or oversight, in places known to be dangerous, and increased guaranteed payments in billions to private prison corporations without going through proper channels. /2
